Obama Campaign Statement on McCain Strategy of Distracting from the Economy

By http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/person/gGXys9">Christopher Hass - Oct 4th, 2008 at 12:59 pm EDT

Obama-Biden Spokesman Bill Burton released the following statement today, in response to the http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/03/AR2008100303738_pf.html">McCain's campaign's admission that their new strategy is to distract the American public from the current economic situation:

On a day after we learned that America lost three-quarters of a million jobs this year and a week after our financial system teetered on the brink of collapse, John McCain and his campaign have announced that they want to ‘turn the page’ on the economic crisis facing working families and spend the last month of this election launching dishonest, dishonorable character attacks against Barack Obama. We understand that it’s not easy for John McCain to defend the worst economic record of our lifetime, but he will have to explain to the people struggling to pay their bills and stay in their homes why he would rather spend his time tearing down Barack Obama than laying out a plan to build up our economy.

John McCain and his campaign may want to turn the discussion away from the economy, but he cannot run from
http://www.johnmccainrecord.com/economy/">his economic record.

In the coming weeks, it will be more important than ever to push against these dishonest attacks. 1. If it hasn't worked yet

Why would it work now?

For the last 2 years the GOP has been claiming Obama is:

Muslim
Al Qaeda secret agent
Radical black nationalist
tied to terrorists
wants to raise taxes on the middle class
America hater

The people who are affected by that stuff have already seen it and know it. Do they have new stuff? I would assume most of this stuff has run its course and been debunked for the majority of people now. And the people who still believe it probably would never vote Obama anyway and are just using it as an excuse to vote McCain.

Do they think they can cover a 12 point gap with this crap? And like the article says, what about the moderates and independents who are turned off by this stuff? It may excite the base, but it'll also excite the democratic base to unite behind Obama and turn swing/moderate voters towards Obama too when he rebuts that we have too many serious issues facing the world and country to be distracted with these smears.

Like many people, I donated more money when Palin joined because she is too incompetent to be in the white house. If McCain pulls this stuff he better be prepared to watch his reputation crumble, push away undecided voters and unite the democratic base behind Obama. All he'll achieve is riling up his base, which will vote for him anyway. And since they can't donate money since he is on public financing, they can't even get that. Obama's supporters can still donate money however.
