12. The Maverick Family has been in the US since just after the Mayflower
they came over seeking religous freedom (my ancestor co-lead a group with Rev. Maverick), fought in the Revolution, and in this century, fought for civil rights. Maury Jr represented conscientious objectors to the draft for free.

11. A maverick is an unbranded cow
so named because way back in the day, Sam Maverick refused to brand his cattle. Anytime someone came across an unbranded cow, they called it a "maverick."

The Maverick family has quite an extensive history in the US. They definitely have done a lot for this country & march to a different drummer, such as Maury Jr wanting a stripper to perform at his funeral.

If you really want to end some GOPer waxing poetic about McCain being a maverick, look up some of the things the REAL Mavericks actually did for a fun compare/contrast.
