"Can I call you Joe?"...Was this a Rovian gambit to entice Biden to call her "Sarah" during debate?

Were the RNC propagandists betting (based on their focus groups & psy-ops expertise) that American women might view Biden as patronizing?

....and/or that Palin's claim to be just an average American would be re-enforced?

... but Biden didn't bite, and consistently & respectfully referred to her as "Gov. Palin".

Thus, Biden wisely insulated himself from accusations of condescension, while at the same time undermining her authenticity as a non-politician "soccer mom" to representing "Joe Sixpack".

"Can I call you Joe?" has all the features of a gambit straight out of the Rovian playbook, focus-group tested by the usual high-dollar RNC propagandists.

They wanted to draw Biden down.... into a game they could win.

But by not biting, never questioning her (or her handler's) motives), and giving her nothing but respect, while absolutely destroying McCain on SUBSTANCE, Biden let her expose herself for the lightweight she is.

What do you think?

Was this just "Palin being Palin"?

Or was this quote originate from the RNC puppetmasters?

:kick:

1. Nah, I think it was just a setup to use her zingers.
The "say it ain't so, Joe" bullshit.

2. She didn't say "Joe." She said "Jyogh" which is easer to say than "Byih-dyehn." n/t

5. I had an idea it was so she could refer to "Barack" rather than
"Sen. Obama." She was trying to put herself on their level with the first name basis. She's been hoisted to their level.

Biden wisely did not take her up on this and talked about votes he, Obama and McCant had made in Congress all these years, highlighting that she was never involved.

In fact, she responded with something like "I'm obviously an outsider," here. IMO that did not even help her, but rather helped underline Biden's subtle point. She's in over her head.

6. Definitely an RNC strategery move.
Either, as you and I thought, an attempt to get him to call her Sarah so she could claim he was sexist by not using her title,

OR

just to throw Biden off his game and get him wondering why she'd ask that, as I heard someone speculate on TV after the debate.

And it shows that she's better than her candidate John McCain, by talking directly to her opponent and pretending to be friendly.

7. "Say it ain't so, Joe" set-up
They may have had other things in mind to by asking Joe Biden for his permission to call him "Joe", but the set-up for "Say it ain't so, Joe" is an obvious one

8. Eveything she does is by the Repuke "handlers". It is classic Rovian.
I also think it was a set-up for her future "Say it ain't so, Joe" remark. I wonder what she would have done if Biden had said "I'd prefer you call me Sen. Biden"? That would have REALLY thrown her into a tailspin later in the debate, as it would have taken away--what I'm sure she considered to be-- one of her best slam-dunks.

btw, do you think perhaps her name is really Paling, but since she likes to drop her g's, changed it to Palin' to sound more folksy?

11. Letterman pointed out last night that this "nicety" of hers was simply to set up
the "Say it ain't so, Joe" line later.

12. It showed her lack of respect for a man old enough to be her
father. Compared to her, Biden is an intellectual giant. She was just trying to pull him down into her level.

16. It was an excuse to use that stupid "say it ain't so" line.
Probably why she said it SO LOUD ahead of the debate.
