I grew up in Athens County--third poorest county in the state (after Meigs and Vinton, I believe). Mostly rural Appalachian foothill country, no jobs, no money and shit out of luck. Some of the kids in my high school grew up in houses without indoor plumbing--in the 70s, if you can feature that. Even now, something like 25% of the population is on some form of public assistance at any given time. Now, a lot of those folks are well-meaning, salt of the earth good people, if you can overlook the junked cars in the yard and the sound of four-wheelers roaring across your property all hours of the day, and the occasional crank-induced shooting spree. But like a lot of the white rural poor in this country, they're disinclined to vote for Democrats in general because of abortion (they're agin it, unless it's them or their kid that gets knocked up), defense (Democrats are pussies!), and guns (because if those sonsofbitches down the road don't quit fucking with my pot patch, I'm gonna kill the motherfuckers). Also, the less-thoughtful among them will never, ever, under any circumstances vote for a black guy, no matter what he promises them.
