Coat hanger demon lurks at anti-Palin rally - (and she is my good friend!)

By CAROLYN SZCZEPANSKI

As pundits on the cable networks counted down to the vice presidential debate in St. Louis last night, more than 50 protesters gathered at the J.C. Nichols Fountain near Country Club Plaza for a rally against Republican hopeful Sarah Palin, calling attention to the Alaska Governor's record on women's rights and the environment. Attending the "Palin: Every Woman's Worst Nightmare" event were a group of young men sporting Satan suits and a forest sprite with silvery wings. But one longtime activist made a particularly deadly statement.

Name: Carol Huhs

Claim to activist fame: She's attended the weekly peace demonstration held by the 63rd Street Patriots for 293 consecutive Tuesdays.

Her objective: Call attention to Palin's opposition to a woman's right to choose.

The reason for her passion: When Huhs was a child, she says, her older sister got pregnant and, because the procedure was illegal, sought an abortion underground. "She said, 'Pray for me. I'm afraid I'm going to die.'"

Her sign: White paperboard with two plastic hangers and the blood-soaked slogan "Coat hanger Palin: Every woman's nightmare." Huhs was inspired to create the placard several weeks ago and intends to carry it to other events leading up to the election.

Her costume: The creepy head shroud and corpse-colored plastic fingers were costumes items she already had stashed in her closet. But the cascading black garb was a thrift-store find. Dress: $3.98. Robe: 90 cents.

Signature soundbite: "I wanted to do this because I think everyone in America should be calling her 'coat hanger.'"
