Here's my debate analysis for what it's worth
Sorry it's so late but I had to work.

*blow kiss to audience* can I call you Joe? Dude, are you dating now?

Calls him Sen. Biden for the rest of the date. OUCH! Burn. ;)

Biden goes straight to the last 8 years of the Bush Admin. and stays there. Straight to Obama's plan for the economy.

Palin goes to the soccer mom crap immediately. FEAR, FEAR, FEAR. But her voice shakes a bit at the beginning of the debate.

Biden starts with his work regarding violence against women. Good one. Says McCain is "out of touch".

Palin repeats talking point about how McCain was talking about the "workforce", not the economy. Has learned her lines well.

Continues with "mavericks" and "reform". Barf.

God, her breathy voice and "new/different" and so excited.. she obviously wants the entire audience to fuck her. It's almost more than I can watch.

"Darn Right." I cannot roll my eyes any further.

Biden: Nice line, average Joe doesn't KNOW how much it costs to fill his gas tank 'cause he can't afford to fill it all the way up.

Uh oh, Biden's getting worked up talking about the middle class. Don't lose your cool, Joe! It's too early in the debate for that.

Dude. Did you see how quick that brilliant sexy smile from Palin turned into a serious scowl? Scary.

Biden: Responds to boilerplate talking point about "wealth redistribution" saying it's FAIRNESS. Good one.

Re: 20 million people being dropped from healthcare - "That's the Ultimate bridge to nowhere." THE ENTIRE AUDIENCE LAUGHS, despite being told beforehand to keep a lid on it! Wow.

Biden loses me in the numbers sometimes. Keeps saying "Gwen", focusing his comments toward the moderator instead of Palin. Very smart.

Brings up businesses operating from PO boxes out of the country as "unpatriotic" - Great!

Gawd, Sarah just said "energy" 10 times in the last minute. Gonna have to add that word to my drinking game.

********YES!************

Biden AGREES with Palin on windfall profits tax on oil companies, says "how are you gonna convince your boss that you're right?" MAJOR points scored there.

Oops. Biden puts foot in mouth, saying he saw the glass half full while Obama saw it half empty on a vote. Makes Obama look like a pessimist. Oh well, he's gotta put his foot in mouth at least once doesn't he? Hopefully this won't turn into a major thing. Can't really see how it could.

Biden scores more points saying we need to not just bring down the interest rates for homeowners but also the PRINCIPAL.

Palin switches to "energy" whenever she can't come up with a canned answer.

Biden FLAT-OUT says global warming is man-made. Loses nobody 'cause the wingnuts wouldn't have voted for him anyway, but still I expect them to make an issue of this.

Palin talking about "raping the planet" and "little footprints" for oil-drilling - did someone think this was gonna work? Obviously written for her.

Gay marriage/civil unions - Biden confirms worst fears of the religious crowd, Palin capitalizes, Biden comes back with not supporting gay marriage but the damage is done. Not that this is such a big issue really, compared to - say, abortion, which surprisingly enough NEVER comes up in this debate.

Iraq - Biden says McCain is the "odd man out" and also voted against funding. "No end in sight to the war with McCain."

Palin - another canned remark that was written for her, talking about the "white flag of surrender". Will clearly score points with the brain-dead however. The surge worked, etc etc. Biden on the defensive big-time. Battles back almost even by pointing out McCain was wrong every time while Obama was right.

On to Iran and Afghanistan - Biden strong here. Points out that Afghanistan and Pakistan are where the REAL threat to America is. (No mention of Saudi Arabia though.. well what do you expect.)

JESUS CHRIST. WHY IS IT THAT SARAH PALIN CAN PERFECTLY PRONOUNCE "AHMEDINEJAD" BUT NOT "NUCLEAR"??????

FUCK. If I have to hear "Nukular" for another 4 years I will slit my throat.

Ohhhhhhhhh... "Those who HATE AMERICA" makes its ugly entrance and Palin repeats it a few times for effect. God I just want to wring her neck.

Biden brings up Spain, McCain's ridiculous gaffe, and does it nicely with a touch of real incredulity that seems like he just heard about it and can't believe his ears. I liked it.

Biden continues VERY STRONGLY on the Israel question, and how he warned them not to hold elections because Hamas would win and be legitimized... how he urged UN to go into Lebanon but they didn't and now Hezbollah has also become legitimized. Very strong point for him, Palin falls into the trap of defending the current Administration.

On Polarization, Sarah goes back to her "Maverick" crap and says "Change is comin'."

:eyes:

Biden becoming stronger as it becomes clear that Palin is not a pushover and will not be making any sympathy-inducing mistakes. She, on the other hand, starts to forget that she's supposed to be speaking in a breathy voice.

Biden starts getting long-winded about Afghanistan, he's losing us. Then when Palin starts saying the same surge can work in Afgh, he sighs loudly and audibly! Big mistake, Joe. Fortunately it won't be the talking point of the debate.

Did Joe just call them "Bosniacs"???

He can get away with that I think. Sarah could not have.

Ooooh. Sarah evokes Kerry, talks about how she must be an outsider, can't understand how you can vote for something before voting against it. RW nuts cheering in a bar somewhere. I'm sure she was instructed to fit that in somewhere by Rove himself, and she did even though it didn't really match the question. x(

Biden talks about himself in the third person... not cool, makes him appear full of himself and distant - increases the "average american" gap between himself and Palin.

JESUS. Palin calls Biden a liar. Says "you can say what you wanna say a month out of the election." I want to slap her face off.

Palin at this point has proven she can debate. Does being able to debate translate into being able to run the country? Um, it's debatable.

Biden chokes up while talking about people around the kitchen table trying to make sure their kids can make it, it's a very touching moment that even Lieberman says something about after the debate. Joe obviously is not faking the fact that he knows where many people are coming from and it shows right here. Talks about people needing HELP. Palin comes back with talking points and sounds like an ice queen compared to him at this point. Just doesn't have real believability, and her repeated reference to her extended family being a bit whacko, well I just don't get what it means and how it helps her.

Biden senses that now is the time to strike, and hits on the Maverick issue HARD. Neither one of them are mavericks on issue after issue, health care, the economy, education, the war, nothing people really care about. VERY strong ending.

Then talks about how the ideology of Supreme Court judges makes a big difference - GREAT. Reminds people that the court is tilted and balance is important.

Palin much weaker on answer to when she's changed her opinion - says "never had to compromise on anything because we've always worked together to be bipartisan." WHAT????

Biden responds on how to change the tone in Washington with a very authentic-sounding story about how he learned not to question people's motives - just their judgment.

Palin blurts out that she appointed people regardless of their political leanings (maybe 'cause they were loyal to her?) but she would not be making any appointments as VP so this is a moot point.

Palin closes with an attack on the MSM, making sure the audience draws a distinction between her horrible interviews and this debate performance - basically, forget all that, it was a setup and this is real. She then goes back to FEAR, FEAR, FEAR and how we must fight for our freedoms. Be afraid, be very afraid.

I'm afraid, Sarah. But not of what you want me to be afraid of.

HOLY CATS! Biden ends by almost LITERALLY repeating the same words I wrote in my latest letter to the editor of my local paper!

http://journals.democraticunderground.com/FlyingSquirrel/34

I said:

The simple fact is that Republicans had control of all three branches of government for six years and responded by digging the country into a deep hole, both economically and with respect to our standing in the world. It's only fair now to give Democrats an equal opportunity and see what they do with it.

Joe says the exact same thing. Then talks about the middle class once more for those who might've missed it. I know Palin talked about soccer moms etc. but I don't think the words "middle class" passed through her lips the entire night. Biden talks about the troops and how they need to be treated once they come home. Ends with saying, America, when you get knocked down, GET UP! Loved it. Very inspirational.

No letter grades from me, I think you can tell what I thought.

2. Thank you very much!
I greatly appreciate your concise description of the debate along with your humor. We'd taped the entire thing and were going to watch it tonight to see if any major gaffes were made. But, after reading your comments we don't have to expend the time.

r.

4. I give you an A on that report.
But that could be a right wing talking point...that Biden plagiarized your letter to the editor...they would fail to see that when things are obvious a lot of people will say the same thing.

6. "Bosniak" is the correct term
Biden used the term to refer to Muslims living in Bosnia. The term "Bosniak" specifically refers to these folks, to avoid confusion with ethnic Serbs (Orthodox) and Croats (Catholic) living in the country.

9. Actually the half full/half empty is not a *foot in mouth scene*...
Edited on Fri Oct-03-08 02:26 PM by vaberella
It shows they have a difference of opinion on the matter and the situation as they looked at it which will be great in the Presidency. That's normal and can easily be spun to show Obama was more concerend while he felt all the bases would be covered.

Great synopsis.

10. In regards to the gay marriage/civil unions you know she agreed to give them full rights too.
Basically she demolished her position with a lot of the wingnuts who don't want to recognize it at all. Palin didn't capitalize on that moment she actually lost it.

12. And winking.
Constant winking.

Last week on SNL, Tina few did that "Psssh! Psssh!" shooty-gun thing to embody Sarah's "I'm so adorable" schtick. This week she can just wink, wink, wink.

13. Cutesy winking is merely annoying, but bright smiling when talking/hearing death/destruction
makes me think either passive aggressive and want to fulfill the "slap her" wish, or that she hasn't a clue of what is being talked about.

16. Yes, I s'pose I did - although I did say:
Palin switches to "energy" whenever she can't come up with a canned answer.

But yes, the frequency with which she completely ignored the question was striking (and has been covered by many)
