1. It's an everyday guy

Has a blue-collar job, get's a six pack of beer for after work or the weekends, mows the lawn, watches the game on TV, etc. Usually lower middle class.

If I were a Joe Six-Pack, I'd probably be voting for McCain anyway.

It's not just that he drinks beer, but that he drinks it a six-pack at a time, because he just wants to get drunk and wind down from a long hard day at work--not because he actually likes the taste of Coors Light.

He doesn't have much of an education, nor much culture--unless you consider sitting on the couch, watching NASCAR and/or Football with a half-finished six pack next to you "culture."

Basically, he's Homer Simpson, and he's just as fictional (at least as far as being this huge homologous voting bloc).

As bushwentawol said, it's primarily just a lazy beltway journalist's (and politician's) way of trying to create a narrative without actually doing any research. Soccer moms, Nascar dads, security moms, Joe Six-Pack, etc.

Its so simplistic a way to view how a person sees their world and therefore how they will vote:

So, for example, I am:
- white... if racist I vote McCain? ;-) if not I vote Obama?
- university degree... I vote Obama
- traveled a lot... I vote Obama
- love Ice Hockey... I vote McCain
- Drink wine (as well as beer)... independent, we'll have to see.
- Protestant, well ex actually... depends how much ex but might swing McCain.
