Mike Murhpy's best day as a pundit: "If she answers any more ?s like that I will need a 6 pack"
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 06:15 PM by grantcart
Mike Murphy knows how to play the role and he has all the talking points when he shows up for Sundays on the talk show circuit but he has a tell where he starts to laugh at himself when he repeats the most ridiculous lines of the GOP. Also he will actually go off script from time to time and show some independent thought.

Well today he obviously has had enough and doesn't want any more of his self respect going down with this McCain (who he used to work for) in this uniuqe disaster movie called a campaign.

He starts the morning bypassing the criticism of McCain's absolutely terrible appearence with the Des Moines Register editorial board and states the most obvious question - why is he even there?

http://www.time-blog.com/swampland/2008/10/des_moines_register.html

As a former general in the GOP, I get a lot of emails from various operative types around the country. Many are old comrades from the forgotten wars of old Republican statewide campaigns. Unlike the well meaning but under-experienced six month wonders who seem to populate most of the GOP campaign apparat in Washington of late, these salty old pros have years of experience out in the field actually winning campaigns for our side, especially during the Republican glory years of the 90's when we held about every Governor's office in the country worth holding, as well as the House and Senate. Most are sidelined this time. And almost to a person they are dismayed by what they see as the stunning lack of competence in the McCain operation. One very smart consultant who knows McCain well sent me a link this morning to the video of McCain at Des Moines Register Editorial board interview. Set aside whatever you think of McCain's interview; this operative's point was purely technical and dead on correct:

What the Hell was McCain even doing there in the first place?

1.) Obama is going to win Iowa.

2.) Editorial board meetings are usually pure trouble to begin with and result only in newspaper endorsements that persuade very few voters beyond the immediate family members of the editorial board.

3.) Within the rarified category of newspaper editorial boards, the Des Moines Register is one of the most liberal in the country. I'm rather surprised that halfway through the McCain interview they failed to switch over to Esperanto, the peace-loving language of all nations.

So, 35 days left and McCain is in Iowa? Why put McCain in the wrong state, at the wrong place? No surprise the result is the wrong message and the wrong tone.

Murphy is obviously only stating what everyone at DU and many intelligent Republicans are thinking - What is McCain doing?

Is he going to run over to Hawaii next? Take on the Chicago ACLU? How about do a big rally in Harlem?

So now on David Gregory's filler show on MSNBC 'Race for the Whitehouse' They are winding up the show and David Gregory plays the astonishing tape of Palin rambling about how she is the new 'Joe 6 pack' and people can't get used to the fact that there is a new 'Joe 6 pack in town.

Gregory goes to Shrum who makes some comment and then goes to Murphy who ends his comment with, "Well if she makes any more answers like that I am going to need a 6 pack."

Shrum and Gregory were so doubled up with laughter they had to go to commercial. Murphy's best day yet as a TV pundit.

4. McSame's current staff did turn him around in the primary.
It looked like he was finished and their fire and brimstone Repub restoric got him the nomination. However, Murphy is right about their general election campaign. They never switched to an appeal to independents successfully. They still had to keep pushing towards energizing their base because they did not trust McCain. They also tend to try and win news cycles with stunts instead of a real long term strategy. Apparently McCain doesn't know the difference between tactics and strategy.

14. It's hard to keep track of his campaign but he retooled twice (I think).
If I'm remembering correctly, he promoted Rick Davis and gang when he fell behind in the primary and they were credited with pulling him through it. Once he fell behind Obama back in the summer, he brought in Schmidt and his team of Rovites but Davis and the lobbyist group still plays a major role in his campaign.
