We.Are.SO.Not.Listening
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 03:20 AM by NanceGreggs
In the past few weeks, I have foolishly exposed myself to a much stronger dose of MSM newsery than is good for the soul, healthy for the intellect, or safe at any speed.

Like millions of Americans, I have been soaked by the spiel; the pre-debate and post-debate, the projections and reflections, the speculation, the musings, the unintentional comedic stylings, the fair and the balanced, the biased and the broad-stroked, the folded, stapled, spindled and mutilated ravings of the Best Little Political Whoredom in History – aka our beloved media – and have realized what they have obviously not: it’s over, you’re done, go home.

We.Are.SO.Not.Listening.

We are uninterested in whatever it is you have to say, whatever product it is you’re trying to hawk, whatever polls, surveys, or demographics you want to trot out and declare as gospel, and whatever opinions you insist on proffering as though any one of us still gives a flying fuck. Because we don’t.

There are two men currently vying for the Presidency of the United States and, as is increasingly apparent, only one of them is suited to the position. And while you of the so-called mainstream media drone on and on about everything from body language to blinks-per-second, the grown-ups have left the building and are now going about the business of ensuring the election of the right man for the job.

And yet you babble on incessantly, oblivious to the fact that We.Are.So.Not.Listening.

Given how low the bar has been set in the past decade, it is almost impossible to pinpoint the exact minute the political pundits and their enabling media morons jumped the shark. Personally, I’d put my money on the moment someone started selling a startlingly unqualified clueless idiot as a viable option to lead a nation in crisis because she can, after all, see Russia from her house.

This is what you’ve come to, all of you talking hairdos with nothing of value to say, and far too much airtime in which to say it. And the fact that you don’t have the decency to blush from embarrassment as you spew it is indisputable proof, as though any more were needed, that there are among us those who truly do have no shame.

Tens of thousands dead in a war you promoted like a ratings-grabbing miniseries sure to bring in the viewers and the bucks, Constitutional rights torn and tattered while you made a spectacle of shredding the once-noble profession of journalism with your stunning displays of ignorance, a middle-class that all but disappeared while you discussed missing teenagers and the fading careers of the once rich-and-famous, a government that tortured, imprisoned, raped, and plundered with abandon while you busied yourselves with looking the other way.

We.Are.So.Not.Listening.

But please feel free to continue talking to yourselves and/or each other as the case may be, to chatter like gossiping housefraus at the local bingo emporium, to opine on the non-existent neck-and-neck of your imaginary horserace, to tsk-tsk over the numbers, the nickels, and the nuances as though they mattered to anyone beyond the small and irrelevant box that frames your faces and defines your own ineptitude.

We.Are.So.Not.Listening.

We have a country to take back, a fire to be rekindled, a dream to be recaptured, a battle to be won – and, ultimately, a nation to be reshaped into something we can once again take pride in.

And, quite frankly, you are no longer a part of the picture, nor are you relevant to the conversation.

It’s over, you’re done – go home.

see and hear on a daily basis.

I'll give you a hint: a hell of a lot more voters arent paying rapt attention than are.

Thats what John McCain is counting on with his copy and I did it first campaign he is running. We know Obama said it first people dont. He is also going with all the negative, because he knows a MAJORITY of voters do not, have not and are not paying rapt attention, they consume this election through Single Serving Soundbites.

In fact more than a third of them are such low information voters, they probably wont even use that minuscule amount of info to gain insight and will pretty much flip the switch along regional and party lines with out even knowing WHY.

Welcome to America the Single Serving Soundbite Republic

44. That's what i was thinking too...
however, informed or non-informed...we can still work together to take the country beck. and WE can help with informing as we get out and talk about the information we read right here!

AND - regardless of the # of people actually listening to these yutz's, they keep talking.
Nance makes a good point, that they beat a dead horse because they have to find "something" to talk about to fill all that airtime... but they sure don't use it to pursue actual JOURNALISM. Nobody looks at the war or the constitutional rape or the torture and countless other things that have been done by this administration and others in power ... i guess the real truth is bad for ratings.

54. I agree....the general electorate is basically ignorant....
I believe that there are more of them than us....They listen to radio talk shows and the evening news faithfully, take in every hateful and ignorant word...and believe all the lies and distortion.

When I volunteered for John Bonifaz during his run for SOS, I got a harsh jolt of reality.
Out of the hundreds of signatures I got, there was not one person who knew who he was. Not one.
They signed simply because he was a Democrat. Period. "Well, as long as he's a Democrat, everyone deserves to be on the ballot." And so they signed...and probably didn't even remember his name.
I found it hard to believe that no one knew the name John Bonifaz. I was actually sickened.

peace~

But sadly, I cannot agree with the conclusion, as much as I agree with the sentiment. For WE are not listening to their blather, but unfortunately, many still are. And as long as the cable news outlets continue to get viewship, then they can spin the stolen election to their favor by saying the polls were wrong, it was closer than the damn librul media made it out to be. So they are still part of the picture, and most unfortunately, still relevant to the conversation.

God, I've become so cynical under this administration!

P.S. This has been one of my favorite posts from you so far. Ever heard the song "Good People" by Jack Johnson?

http://artists.letssingit.com/jack-johnson-lyrics-good-people-qp1mf25

You might notice some hesitation 'cause
It's important to you, it's not important to me
But way down by the edge of your whole reason
Well it's beginning to show
And all I really wanna know is

Where'd all the good people go ?
I've been changing channels
I don't see them on the TV shows
Where'd all the good people go ?
We got heaps and heaps of what we sow

Bad news, misused
Got too much to lose
Gimme some truth
Now whose side are we on ?
Whatever you say, turn on the boobtube
I'm in the mood to obey
So lead me astray, and by the way now

Where'd all the good people go ?
I've been changing channels
I don't see them on the TV shows
Where'd all the good people go ?
We got heaps and heaps of what we sow

Station to station
Desensitizing the nation
Going, going, gone

Bush Maladministration: The obliteration of our TRUST in the VERACITY of the Fourth Estate.

Because when the MSM are no longer trusted to be disinterested parties reporting facts and uncovering truths, PROPAGANDA is elevated to its equal in the public's perception.

That journalists, reporters, editors, and publishers aided and abetted their own trivializing, marginalizing, and professional betrayal---e.g., Judith Miller---is astounding, not least in their seeming obliviousness to their roles in the demise of the Free Press.

It also keeps me from being so lonely. I watch little of what is on. Some days I may have the tv on all day and only watch about three or four shows. It is basically a noise habit for me.

About the reiki symbol. I have to be truthful and say I did not know what it was when I chose it, but something drew me to it. Upon looking it up I find it is very fitting for me. Nice to know it is fitting for others as well.

29. K&R -- wishing the media could be de-consolidated.
Tired of 6 rightist corporations ruling the mass media landscape.

After reading Eric Alterman's "What Liberal Media?" -- the right wing control of the media was no longer a fuzzy supposition but a determined plan being fulfilled.

It made me feel less crazy for having abandoned the mainstream TV news and pundit shows because I found them too biased in favor of the administration. Alterman's book explained that I was right and how it had happened and how those talking point distribution networks were established and maintained.

I find it hard to understand how some friends can watch that stuff, pretending it is at all balanced or logical. 90% of the TV news commentariat promoted the administration's perspective in an unbalanced manner. Lots of the commentators still try to give the administration the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe some people don't remember the days when we had more like 40% of reporters critical of the administration with 60% trying to explain away their position. The media has been pushed to the right since the 80's. Bit by bit. Merger by merger.

50. You couldn't be more correct. The MSM is irrelevant to me and most I know
and respect. They have misled us time and time again. Time for them to STFU.

51. Are they still there?
I moved recently and after not overly much thought left my television behind. I don't miss it nearly as much as I thought I would.
Glad I was on time to pin a rec on this one!

55. Just curious...
...where do you go for news? I agree that the MSM has been completely discredited and can't be trusted. Yet we need to be informed. So where can Americans go for the unvarnished truth? I used to out my faith in the grand old NYT but those days are over. Trouble is, I haven't yet found a source to replace it.

about a woman in Ohio who claims she's skeptical about voting for Obama because of the whole lapel pin incident. Sorry, but many of the ostriches' heads are still buried in the mainstream news sand. :( :wtf:

Maybe because it was so much the truth, until for me it was matter of fact.

But now, the more I think about your words, it should be made mandatory for each and every frigging pundit to read this OP before they start serving the time that they deserve...because after everything is said and done, they are nothing more than a highly paid bunch of treasonous criminals.

70. Personally I Agree, I've Been So.Not. Listening. However, I Would
bet money on those who ARE.SO.LISTENING! This has been one of my pet peeves for more years than I care to remember. A person walks by their TV, hear some biased sound bite they like, walks out the door and REPEATS their version of the snippet and so it goes.

My greatest FEAR has been that this is what this country is all about. My greatest FEAR is that what they spew HAS been the bottom line for MOST of the people. People have even honed their listening voice by which station they want to watch, which show they want to watch or which radio host they will listen to.

Even here at DU, it's mostly KO and now Rachel Maddow. At times I've posted information from C-Span and Democracy Now and other alternative news and get no reply. I read books that have some very good information, that have been fact checked and yet it's what THEY say that gets most of the attention. Stop and think for a while, and I've seen it time and time again HERE AT DU, as soon a comment is made, we rush to DU with a pro or con comment.

We may have done extensive research on any given topic, googled the truth and posted it but we still have a long way to go. THEY have the cameras in front of them and THEY have large enough audiences that KEEP them in front of the cameras. Whether it's "fair and balanced" isn't what concerns them, what concerns them is THE RATINGS! Someone must be listening and many here ARE listening. I LOVE Bill Moyers, but I'd bet there are more simpletons out there who don't even know who he is. Yes, he has a program, but I wonder how his ratings would stack up against MSM!!

I wish it were true that We.Are.So.Not.Listening, I just wonder how many people really are So.Not.Listening.

Just one more thought... for several weeks it's been ALL ABOUT SARAH. YouTube posts here at DU abound and yet I have a FEAR that she just might get a boost tonight because there's a contingent of people out there who ARE.SO.LISTENING, only to hear what they want to. After the debate we will all run here with "facts" about how the pundits rated it. That WILL be listened to, you WILL see it again tonight. You WILL see either outrage, or glee. You WILL see whether WE deem their analysis is correct or not, or if THEY were watching the same thing WE were. I'd bet money on it. Seems there is ALWAYS a thread started here with the blow by blow analysis, minute by minute, word by word. Many times we disagree only to find that OUR disagreement isn't what comes through.

And I agree that we shouldn't let this dictate our lives, these one liners, a look here or there, a slip of the tongue or a nuance that turns people away. Joe Biden could seem overbearing, too stringent or WHATEVER... we will see how it goes and who is SO.NOT.LISTENING!

Since I won't be going to a debate party tonight, I'm not even sure I will be able to watch it until it runs the second time. You may ask why I would do such a thing... my reason is that after THEY all have their say, I want to sit back and determine FOR MYSELF what I see is really what THEY saw.

It would be best for this country if we had a country that DOES actually listen to REALITY rather than RATINGS! It's too bad that I've met too many uninformed people to think otherwise. How many people out there STILL think Obama is a Muslim?? I wonder.

JMHO...

I haven't watched a nightly news or a cable talkfest is, what, ten years or more? . . . and I don't feel that I've missed a thing . . . in fact, I feel far better informed now than I did when I relied on the networks, cable news, and newspapers for "news" and opinion . . .

you're so right . . . WE . . . ARE . . . SO . . . NOT . . . LISTENING!!! . . .

all that drivel that you spew 24/7? . . . might as well save your breath, folks, cause you're only talking to yourselves . . .

77. Great rant...but...
....it's not true.

You and I may not be listening, but a lot of other people are. Even Dem friends come up with things they heard on the tube as "proof" of this or that. Of course Neocons and Undecideds and all in between have a huge demographic of listeners.

I wish it were true.

78. The first of your posts I can't agree with.
Plenty of people listen to the MSM, me included. And while, yes, a lot of what they say is trivial, there is also a lot of terrific stuff available there. I would also point out that the news media have been improving lately, in large part, I suspect, due to the criticism that has been levelled at them, but also because they see the precipice their irresponsibility has led us to.

To say that people "aren't listening" is simply not true.
