I would wager there are a LOT of people in Alaska who don't know who Sarah Palin is. Even Lance Mackey, after winning his second consecutive Iditarod in 2007, didn't know who she was when she called to congratulate him.
http://www.ktuu.com/global/story.asp?s=6235660&ClientType=PrintableANCHORAGE, Alaska -- It's not an uncommon sight for mushers to appear in political ads. DeeDee Jonrowe appeared for her dad, Anchorage Assemblyman Ken Stout, and Martin Buser appeared for Gov. Sarah Palin.
Lance Mackey took the dog mushing world by storm this year, but isn't so political. With his historic win Tuesday, Mackey, a cancer survivor, became the first musher to win the Yukon Quest and Iditarod in the same year.
Mackey's feat impressed the first family. During the celebration, Gov. Palin called to congratulate Mackey, who with high emotions and little sleep could name the nine dogs who brought him across the finish line but couldn't name the governor.
"How you doing sir?" Mackey said before being told the governor was a woman. "Oh that's right; I met you that's right. I'm out of it, yeah it's Murkowski, I've met her before."
Wrong again. Once it was straightened out, Gov. Palin congratulated Mackey on his win.
"Lance Mackey can you hear me? You just made this state very very proud," Palin said.
Gov. Palin said there's no hard feelings over the mix up.
"No, more power to him. Good he's not even a politico, I like him even more now," Palin said.
The names meaning more to Mackey are; Lippy, Hobo, Larry and Fudge, the dogs who carried him more than two thousand miles, a campaign unmatched.
