People from Little Diomede do not know who Palin is
Edited on Tue Sep-30-08 10:30 PM by AzNick
The people on the tiny island of Little Diomede apparently do not know who their governor is.

FYI, this island is the only place where once can see Russia, since one can see Big Diomede from there.

The population is around 150, mostly Natives, who barely know they are Americans.

Edit: I forgot the link

1. Haha, that's funny.
I would wager there are a LOT of people in Alaska who don't know who Sarah Palin is. Even Lance Mackey, after winning his second consecutive Iditarod in 2007, didn't know who she was when she called to congratulate him.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- It's not an uncommon sight for mushers to appear in political ads. DeeDee Jonrowe appeared for her dad, Anchorage Assemblyman Ken Stout, and Martin Buser appeared for Gov. Sarah Palin.

Lance Mackey took the dog mushing world by storm this year, but isn't so political. With his historic win Tuesday, Mackey, a cancer survivor, became the first musher to win the Yukon Quest and Iditarod in the same year.

Mackey's feat impressed the first family. During the celebration, Gov. Palin called to congratulate Mackey, who with high emotions and little sleep could name the nine dogs who brought him across the finish line but couldn't name the governor.

"How you doing sir?" Mackey said before being told the governor was a woman. "Oh that's right; I met you that's right. I'm out of it, yeah it's Murkowski, I've met her before."

Wrong again. Once it was straightened out, Gov. Palin congratulated Mackey on his win.

"Lance Mackey can you hear me? You just made this state very very proud," Palin said.

Gov. Palin said there's no hard feelings over the mix up.

"No, more power to him. Good he's not even a politico, I like him even more now," Palin said.

The names meaning more to Mackey are; Lippy, Hobo, Larry and Fudge, the dogs who carried him more than two thousand miles, a campaign unmatched.

2. Do they know who Putin is?..........
....... do they realize he's the Prime Minister of Russia or do they not have a clue who he is as they've never seen him actually enter Alaskan airspace?

3. "Natives" are American citizens too
I am sure the (probably?) Inuit people who inhabit the American island of Little Diomede know they are American. They may even watch HBO or even MSNBC. Some of them probably even speak English. They may even have relatives on Russian Big Diomede or even the Russian and American mainlands. From the satellite pictures I have seen islanders may be able to walk between the islands in winter. But travel across the 1.5 mile strait separating the islands is the difference between Monday and Tuesday, North America and Asia, Russia and the United States, and very different time zones (Isn't all of Russia on Moscow time?).

I hope Michelle Malkin doesn't find out about this additional border. She is likely to find Russia the new source of illegal immigrants who are causing the sub-prime problem and electing Democrats to office.

A thought: if Alaska is the only state that borders two countries, does this give Palin twice the foreign policy experience of, say, the governor of New Mexico who has only one foreign border?

4. Uh no, no TV on Little Diomede
They are very isolated from what I read and heard, and they barely know they are American, do not read the news, have a limited understanding of the outside world and guess what?

I envy them, somehow.
