NORAD: Sarah Palin has no role in guarding U.S. airspace despite claims in Katie Couric interview

BY JAMES GORDON MEEK
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

Tuesday, September 30th 2008, 5:21 PM

WASHINGTON - When Russian bombers approach American airspace and U.S. Air Force fighters are scrambled, Sarah Palin's phone doesn't ring.

The Alaska governor has no command authority over the guardians of U.S. airspace despite her recent suggestion otherwise.

"She doesn't have any role in that process," Air Force Maj. Allen Herritage, spokesman for the Alaska North American Aerospace Defense Command, told the Daily News.

"The authority to launch and respond to a Russian incursion lies with the Alaska NORAD Region commander" - Air Force Lt. Gen. Dana Atkins, he said.

Palin said last week that her foreign policy experience includes facing the Russians.

"It's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia, as Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America - where do they go? It's Alaska," Palin told CBS' Katie Couric.

"It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation," she said.

Moscow's bombers have skirted Alaskan airspace 20 times, though they have not violated it, during Palin's governorship, officials said.

When F-15 and F-22 interceptors scrambled from Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage in response, John McCain's running mate was not speed-dialed with the news.

"The commander does not call the governor," Herritage said.

10. I could have told you that..
and to be honest it seemed so apparent that I didn't bother mentioning it.. I had a top Secret clearance in the USAF, and have even been trampled like a cartoon cat when the klaxons went off while I was delivering secret papers to the scramble hut.. by the time I dusted myself off and stood up, and walked to the window those Planes were IN THE AIR..

(And this is why I don't believe that NO ONE was scrambled during 911, there had to be a stand down order, period.)

If they had to check with the Gov of every state when they scrambled planes, they'd never get one in the air... and another thing, after spending 12 years in Alaska, and hanging out with USAF pilots in the bars I can tell you that the Russians REGULARLY invade air space up there.. it's a game they play, and both sides use it as practice.. some of the pilots know Russian pilots intimately, they wave at each other as they head home..

Everyone knows that stuff, even in Fairbanks.. :)

I wonder. when the USAF is flying this F22 Interceptors to look for the russian bombers. It be the TU160 or the TU95. Are the russians doing their best to se some characteristic about the new interceptor?. SOmething they can learn about the aircraft and how it works?:.. It is the best aircraft on the block as we know it. And I would guess the russians would be more than just curious to se closer to how everything works.. Are it wice to send the interceptors on front line yet?

The F15 would do the job much better in my opinion... And the russians would be no wiser whe it come to the "crown juvels" aka the F22..

On the other hand, it is interesting to se that the VP candidate is lying true the tooth every time she managed to do it. And I can not understand why the interjuver are not "taking into her" more. And telling that she IS lying.. In her face. Or are it not polite to tell a VP candidate that she is lying anymore?.. I would bet that if an Democratic VP was lying like Ms Palin.. the VP would be killed by the media alone..

14. Hi, Diclotican. Good to see you again.
I don't know what the Russians are up to, but you can bet neither does Sarah Palin. She's a nightmare to most of us here and we hope she goes away sooner rather than later. Yes, she does seem to lie through her teeth, a lot! She's getting a lot of scrutiny in the US because of it; many people are sorely disappointed with her.

Nice to se you too;). It looks lite this election of your are going to be far more interesting that I would dear to hope for when it first was coming into gear. With an economy in an meltdown, and millions out in problems, th republican policy the last 8 year are coming into light.. Before the republicans wanted it anyway.. The whole charade from mr Bush are blowing us all up in the face. And even that the US are been hit hardest for the moment.. The world are been hurting by this.. The old saying, when US get the snooze, the rest of the world are getting the flue is true.. More than ever...

You can bet, that every time the russian are encountering the F22, the Russians are doing their best to get some secrets from it.. They may not get to much of the secrets. But in due time, they may have enough information to patch together more information that the USAF are willing to give the russians credit to yet.. The Russians are not dumb, even that everyone believe them to be it, because they have been broke for more than 17 year.. And the military in Russia have some pretty bright minds in their midst.. The only thing they do not have, are the money and the infrastructure like the US.. But even that is maybe over time, a part of the past.. No I do not hope for a new cold war, that it is no ones interest to have.. But I do believe, for what ever that is worth the Russian are waking up, and would use more money to keep their armed forces in better shape than the case is today.. Even if they scrap the most of the old metals, both in air on the ground and in the water, they wound be keeping a pretty modern army in the field.. With new missiles (who the russians always have loved it looks like) and new Cruises and other sea worth ships, it can be something to follow in the future...

When it come to Palin, I am pretty sure she have not a single clue what the russians are doing.. She looks like a stupid little woman (no offense for the females on DU) who are doing every woman an disadvantage to trying to be a state woman.. She have not clue what so ever, but even then she are trying to be voted into office as the Vice-President of the United States.. She is a nightmare, absolutely a nightmare. A horrible case.. Why in the world, can McCain manage to get a woman who are that stupid?.. He can find far more capable womans in the Republican Party can't he?.. Some who really have a clue about the world, and who can get the Infamous 3am phone without using th nuclear option..

I for one, who are on the outside, can't understand why a woman/man who have no specially clue about the world, can trying to be elected as the next president and vice president of that great nation US are.. Why in the world ar not the media powerfully enough, to get under the skin of the candidates. And to get the tuff thing out?.. Why must Palin be treated like a little princess, when it is very clear for everyone with two ayes, that she is dumb as a donkey (no offense, the regular donkey are in fact a very Wise animal, who have a pretty good brain. Have worked with animals before, and we had an donkey, who was given us some griefs.. He was always running away, and we have to get him everywhere.. Even in a flower shop, where he had eaten up the most expensive flowers off course. He had good taste at least...)

And I thing at least the media in the US are doing their work, that is to scrutiny the candidates.. Specially when the candidate is in denial of her disadvantages when it come to be elected as vice-president.. I for one can not for a second understand why the old state man McCain decided to get into the hunt for the presidency with that woman.. He must understand that she is a no good candidate, and would possible be a great damage to his chances to be elected as the next president?:.

I hope US are voting the right man into office this time around. A man who can build/rebuild the Bridges that the current administration have been burning down the last 8 year.. But I fear it would take more than an Democratic president to get toghter the north atlantic alliance as it was when mr Clinton was leaving office in 2000.. And it will cost the US a lot of money to clear up the damage the current administration have given the US, both economical and on every one else possible cases..

What I hope for, is that the "old america" who I once believed in, and trusted are coming into play. Not the nightmare the last 8 year have been.. I am so sorry to se what damage have been don to the country I do admired, and was in "love with" before.. I do hope you can rebuild what is destroyed. Even that I do know it would never be as before.. The image I once had, is destroyed, shattered beyond repair.. But a new image maybe a more realistic image of the US can be the next.. And I hope you get your former freedom, and prosperity back when the junta, and the war crime profiters are been hold accountable for their crimes.. What US need more than everything else, is a clean brake from the current administration.. Every single of them should be hold accountable for their actions. Then, maybe the american public, even the republicans, would understand what damage the current administration have been doing to US in the aye in the world.. Maybe then, just maybe, the american public would wake up from their "american idol" and the other "shows" and do the right thing.. Be a part of the solution, and not the part of the problems.. Maybe then we can work toghter to build a new, prospectus, rich and better future for every man, woman and children on this planet...

Hopefully it is not to late yet.

15. ON keith!!! OHIO SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS EARLY VOTING!!!
Just heard on KO...the Ohio Supreme court upheld this lower court ruling. THE REPUKES LOST!!!!

U.S. appeals court OK same-day registration, voting in Ohio

A federal appeals court panel has approved same-day registration and voting in Ohio, rejecting a Republican challenge.

The ruling, by the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, came a day after lower state and federal courts also blocked GOP efforts to either stop same-day registration and voting or require those ballots to be segregated and verified.

The Republicans argued that the inability to verify the registration of new voters who cast absentee ballots between today and Oct. 6 will lead to voter fraud.

Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner had instructed county election officials to segregate the same-day-registration ballots and verify them before counting them on Election Day, Nov. 4.
