MoveOn calls for apology from Brokaw

http://pol.moveon.org/emails/brokaw_poll.html
On Sunday's Meet the Press, NBC's Tom Brokaw allowed McCain strategist Steve Schmidt to falsely claim that John McCain had called for Don Rumsfeld to be fired. That's an old lie that the McCain campaign had abandoned long ago -- but Brokaw let Schmidt get away with bringing it back.

Even worse, Brokaw ended the segment by announcing -- "in fairness to everybody here" -- that the "latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll" found that John McCain "continues" to lead Barack Obama on the question of who is "best-equipped to be commander in chief."

Yesterday, Nicole Belle at Crooks and Liars pointed out that the numbers Brokaw read did not, in fact, appear in the "latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll."

Now MoveOn says they contacted NBC -- and "it turns out Brokaw was referring to a poll taken weeks ago--right after the Republican convention and well before Friday's big national security debate. And in each of NBC's last two polls, Americans chose Obama over McCain."

MoveOn thinks Brokaw should apologize.

That's a good first step. He might also want to figure out a way to reassure the public that he'll do a better -- and more fair -- job when he moderates the October 7 presidential debate.

He probably won't spend much time doing that, though -- his days are apparently pretty full acting as NBC's liaison to the McCain campaign. In that role, Brokaw works to assure the McCain camp that "Mr. McCain could still get a fair shake from NBC News."

After Brokaw's performance on Sunday, NBC should be scrambling to assure the Obama campaign of the same thing.

1. Tom has forgotten his role.
Servant of the people's interest, watchdog of liberty. Only an unfettered press stands between the people and tyranny.

6. Yes, before it is too late!
We need to let our voices heard.

Lord knows that unlike the McCain campaign, the Obama campaign will not whine!
But we can protest before the fact, not afterwards!

7. I can't sit through another "flag pin" debate...
A moderator sets the tone for the entire debate.

If Brokaw has such loyal allegiances to McCain, and if he's so concerned
about John McCain getting his message out--maybe he needs to go to work
for the McCain camp, and recuse himself from the role of debate moderator.

If this country has to sit through another unfair, waste-of-time debate like
Stephanopolis and Gibson unleashed on all of us--I think I'll go nuts.

Let's have a fair, substantive debate from a professional who can be
objective and ask questions that make sense.

...or not have a debate at all.

8. Agree. I'm writing my letter this evening - but we need to put pressure elsewhere as well
I want to see Brokaw out - and Schieffer as well (but that isn't happening) - but we need to get this out there in the hands of the people that go before the press on a daily basis. Our letters can carry a lot of weight, but don't forget to send one off to your favorite representative of our party, be they Senator, Congressperson, Strategist, etc.

30. Was he really known to be a Dem?
Wow, thank you for letting me know that. Well, IMHO, he hasn't been a democrat in quite some time. As I mentioned in another thread, I will never forget his smug face with Dubya won the election. I just wanted to...well, do something that wasn't very nice.

16. I already did this. MOVE ON needs to do something HUGE to get Brokaw off NOW!!!
I dont think this will do much. Move on needs a huge petition or something to take to NBC headquarters and let NBC know we are mad as hell that Brokaw is a liar.

Brokaw needs to be objective, he is a GOP hack.

18. Brokaw's a REPUBLICAN
Come on people. Tom Brokaw said during the Democratic Convention and I quote "We the republicans" I lost count of the times he mentioned the republicans and interviewed them during his coverage of the Democratic Convention. I have been through with MSNBC ever since their convention coverage. I only watch Keith and Rachael. At first I thought it was just me Then while I was on Media Matters they had the proof right there. MSNBC has more negative coverage of Obama than CNN. Not that I care for them either but I'm just saying. Step back and be real with yourself Democrats have no media outlet that is for them let alone objective and fair. Also just count how many republican commentators and news reporters they have compared to who? David.S Keith and Rachael? Chris doesn't count he is too flighty. Where is Dan Abrams? He was going after Rove with both barrels loaded and now he's gone. Rachael was getting her own show regardless and Dan's numbers were improving.
I'll end with this when Tim Russert's assistant spoke at his funeral she said. I hope this network doesn't lose it's soul.

Tom Brokaw needs to decide whether he is going to be an objective anchorman, or a advisor to McCain. It's outrageous that he can come out and say things that are not true, and openly support McCain, while trying to damage Obama's campaign. Tom is well past done, and needs to be retired. I along with probably millions of people will no longer watch MTP, because of his obvious bias towards the right. I thought real journalist put the facts out there, the way they are, without spin, and let the people decide what to believe. Somewhere along that line, many in the media have crossed it. Tom is one of them. If Tom wants to host his own show that supports the republicans, so be it. But he should NOT be allowed to host MTP, and the debates. I'm pretty sure Tim Russert would not approve of the way Tom has been acting on MTP.

Tom has been quoted as saying he had also conducted some shuttle diplomacy in recent weeks between NBC and the McCain campaign. This is outrageous!!! Why on earth are MSNBC and NBC pampering McCain?? McCain has constantly LIED to everyone and networks have tried to cover for him. McCain is dangerous to this country, and we will all be OUTRAGED if you and the rest of the networks continue to cover up for his messes.

John McCain deserves to be reported on/about, but the truth needs to be reported, not what Tom wishes it was.

I have already trimmed my viewing of both NBC, and MSNBC, and will boycott further, and push more people away from your networks, if this continues. WE, the people have made YOUR business what it IS. NOT some political candidate. WE the people are who YOUR advertisers target. Not John McCain.

I swear, NBC, and MSNBC get more like Fox everyday.

Pissed off in Florida.

OK, my email just bounced back....WTF?? They have all bounced back now....
