6. Reno newspaper: Obama to Stress Economy Today in Reno; McCain Cancels Visit
Obama to stress economy; McCain cancels visit

By ANJEANETTE DAMON • adamon@rgj.com • September 29, 2008

Reno was shaping up to be the epicenter of presidential politics this week with visits from both candidates and the man they’re seeking to replace.

But while Democrat U.S. Sen. Barack Obama will be rallying supporters Tuesday at the University of Nevada, Reno, his Republican rival U.S. Sen. John McCain canceled a visit planned for Thursday.

The dropped campaign swing has some Republicans, antsy about the closeness of the race in Washoe County, worried that McCain isn’t paying enough attention to a swing county that could determine the outcome of the race in Nevada.

“He has to get back to Northern Nevada specifically,” Republican strategist Robert Uithoven said. “This state is won or lost in Washoe County. You cannot win statewide as a Republican without winning Washoe County.”

Obama’s speech today will be his second visit to Reno since clinching the nomination. He campaigned heavily in the region during the primary. He’s also been to Elko once and Las Vegas three times in the general election campaign.

Although Obama originally planned to speak about health care today, the failure of the economic bailout plan in Congress and subsequent plunge of the stock market has prompted the campaign to focus on the economy.

McCain had planned to speak to a crowd of hunting enthusiasts in Reno for a White House conference on Thursday. It would have been his third trip to Northern Nevada since winning the nomination.

17. McCain having so much turf to defend is taking its toll now.
He is falling behind badly in states he must win. The 50 state strategy is going to end up being the best thing for democrats in decades.

32. For ONCE the Dem candidate is playing it smart
Cancelling a campaign visit is very poor planning, unless for an emergency. Obama deserves to win.

20. If possible, he looks even better in person
His body language is so confident, but he doesn't have a Reaganesque swagger. He appears relaxed but alert at all times, and he has that twinkle in his eyes that comes from being really smart and on the ball.

22. He has so much energy
and vitality. Something we need in a President. This comes from doing something you are passionate about, something bigger than yourself that you believe in.

26. It's a brilliant "Soviet" strategy!
By forcing McFailin' to keep up, he's making to old man exhaust himself, leading to major gaffes along the way. We can turn this country BLUE!

29. Has McCain even made many appearances lately
besides coffee shops?

This is such schadenfreude. McCain truly thought he was entitled to the Presidency. His good old boy club. His backdoor deals and lobbyists.

Steamrolled by a Black man, no less. (the straight talk express got steamrolled haha) That has to rub salt in the wound of hes bigotted body even more. And yes, I do believe he is a bigot.

And don't need to show up together to do damage control interviews.
