----The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf-----

There was a Shepherd Boy who tended his sheep at the foot of a mountain near a dark forest. It was lonely for him, so he devised a plan to get a little company. He rushed down towards the village calling out "Wolf, Wolf," and the villagers came out to meet him. This pleased the boy so much that a few days after he tried the same trick, and again the villagers came to his help. Shortly after this a Wolf actually did come out from the forest. The boy cried out "Wolf, Wolf," still louder than before. But this time the villagers, who had been fooled twice before, thought the boy was again lying, and nobody came to his aid. So the Wolf made a good meal off the boy's flock.

Just saying....

2. But is the boy also the wolf in this case?
Bush warning about impending disaster. Sounds familiar...

In fact, I have the boy/wolf quoted right here:

"There's an old saying in Tennessee. I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee, that says: "Fool me once...shame on...shame on you. If fooled you can't get fooled again."

I understand that people have a lot of different opinions on this subject, but I think that we can all have a respectful discussion, right?

3. How so?
I can see this in multiple lights.

My roommate had a good use of it: We've been so used to this misadministration constantly inciting panic with terrorism threats and whatnot that when a real crisis comes along, we don't listen.

Maybe it's just us, though.

4. Ironically, the fable tells us two things
Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 11:59 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
1) Don't cry wolf, and

2) sometimes it really is a wolf

The secondary, implicit message seems lost on many folks.

In fact, some folks today seem to think the moral of the fable is that only suckers pay attention to alarms!

In actuality, one SHOULD pay attention to alarms. That's why crying wolf is wrong in the first place... because responsible people have no choice but to take the possibility of a wolf seriously.

6. Exactly. I just thought this fable was so compelling for where we find ourselves

at this point in time. So, does one error on the side of caution, or throw caution to the wind....that's the question.

Bush just this evening.

There will be a time where the cries are legitimate, and when the wolf will be snarling, threatening to eat things up if action isn't taken, but it seems that the previous false cries have convinced a majority here that this call is still yet another false cry.

I am of the camp that would prefer to err on the side of caution and come to the aid of the boy and see if there really is a wolf bearing its teeth. The stakes are too big this time around not to, and unlike other cries from the boy over the past eight years, this cry is backed up by a visible and documented trend of declining economic and financial security/liquidity/and general strength and a chorus of voices from both sides of the aisle.

9. Yes, there have been signs for a while, if people were paying attention.

About a month ago, I was listening to XM, and a news thingy came on, and it was about the FED--or whom ever warns about banks being on a 'watch list'. There were 15 banks on that list, but they obviously don't tell you who they are. I rember wondering if mine was one.

It was apparently, as of today, Citygroup now owns them.

12. sometimes it really is a wolf

Exactly! And the fact that no one believed the boy when the wolf came didn't change the fact that the wolf did indeed come.

And how is it that no one here remembers that the last time this boy called wolf Obama called him on it, nor notices that THIS time he isn't?

14. Yes that's the thing,
there might really be a wolf but because the boy lied so many times now when there might be real danger...no one believes. :-(

13. All the other times it was just the boy crying
I'll be damned if no one hears some barking and growling this time and if you heard them before then your ears have more range than mine because this is the first noise I've heard other than that boys lies. Now Bush has hit us with late fee that devalues the entire economy by 655 billion (yay, diminished buying power!!!). As far as I can tell it would have been better to gamble the 250 billion and maybe get a fair chunk back.
