19. RUNNING TRANSCRIPT HERE:
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 02:49 PM by VolcanoJen
Thanks, Tivo!

Joe Scarborough: I'm curious, what did you think of Zell Miller's speech last night?

Wes Clark: Well, I thought it was a gross distortion of John Kerry's record, and a lot of hateful and nasty things said which really do not belong in American politics.

Joe: General, you should talk to Zell Miller about smiling through his message, as you do! What Zell said last night is that his party, the Democrats, left him and other conservatives. I take it you disagree with that.

Wes: I just joined the Democratic Party. For the last year or so, I find it to be a very middle of the road group of people who are very pragmatic about facing the issues. Let's take a look at some of the things he said that were just wrong. Zell believes, and said, that the critics of the president are only motivated by partisan advantage. I mean, nothing could be more unfair to the men and women across this country than to slander people who have real concerns about the strategic wisdom of the president's course of action. Many of my retired officers, friends, former generals, agree with me that going to Iraq had nothing to do with winning the war on terror. In fact, going to Iraq made winning the war on terror much more difficult. As I listened to three days of the convention, really Joe, all of the rhetoric about George W Bush comes down to one fact: after 9/11, he led the nation into war with Iraq. He did it despite the evidence, against the advice of a lot of regional experts, and it has no connection with the war on terror. Now, he wants credit for stubbornly staying the course in Iraq! Yeh, we're there, and we're gonna have to succeed. But the American people should know that what he's trying to take credit for is bad judgement. Almost 1,000 dead, 200 billion dollars, and it hasn't brought us closer to victory against the people who struck this country on 9/11. It's been a diversion, and a distraction.

Joe:(after showing a part of Zellout's speech) A lot of people agree with Zell Miller that when you have politicians attacking our troops - not our troops, that's wrong - but attacking our war efforts, that somehow, that's disloyal. Do you believe that politics ends at water's edge, and can you balance that with questioning a war when it may be going in the wrong direction? (he was speaking of Vietnam here)

Wes: Politics does end at water's edge, you won't see a lot of people running for office going over campaigning in Europe or Asia and attacking our country. But, when the President takes the country to war, it becomes a political issue. He has to be judged as Commander in Chief, we have a right to question his judgement. That's all it is. It has nothing to do with the men and women in uniform. Look, John Kerry was there! By the way, George Bush and Dick Cheney weren't. I was there in Vietnam! A lot of Democrats have served in uniform, I'll bet there's as many Democrats who have served as Republicans. We support our troops. We love them! I do. My heart is there with them, that's why I spoke out against his decision to take this country to war in Iraq. It was bad judgement. That's the only significant accomplishment this president can claim, Joe! He hasn't brought jobs to America, he hasn't improved health care. The number of those without health insurance has gone up. There's nothing really that the president can say he's accomplished in four years other than taking us to war with Iraq, and that was a mistake! It has nothing to do with partisan politics, it has everything to do with people like me who wore the uniform and now say, 'Whoa! you're going the wrong way!' What I learned about Vietnam is that a lot of people spoke out when they got home, but they weren't the right people. The retired generals who should have spoken out then, didn't. We're speaking out now because we want to save this country from this kind of continuous mistake we see unfolding in Iraq. God knows what will happen if Bush is re-elected. That's why we're speaking out, because we are patriotic, we are loyal, and we're speaking out on behalf of the men and women over there.

Joe: (after showing Cheney saying Bush will never seek a permission slip to defend America) Popular line last night, General. Respond.

Wes: It's just the same old... it's an applause line that always excites Republican audiences. It's a distortion of everything John Kerry said. I think you were at the DNC, Joe, I don't remember talking to you there, but John Kerry said he'll never hesitate to defend this country, he won't hesitate to use force when it makes sense! But striking Iraq was not a blow against terrorists. It's debatable, whether it's made America any stronger. It's certainly bogged down our armed forces over there. But John Kerry and all the Democrats have always said that we will operate multilaterally if we can, and unilaterally if we must. That's the rule. That's all we've said, that's consistent, we've said that since the end of the Cold War. I was writing some of those policies while in the military, and they were all approved by the civilians over across the river. So, I don't think there's any difference there. This is just a Republican applause line, and I hope the American people can see past that. We've got a real choice in this election, Joe. We can go ahead as a country and reelect George Bush, we'll get more of the same failed policies. Or, we can put America back on the right track with an administration that cares about ordinary people, that works to create American jobs, that gives tax cuts for ordinary Americans, not just wealthy ones, that really does fix health care. And that also keeps this country safe, strong, and restores respect for America in the world. Those are the choices, and that's what America has to decide in the next 60 days.

Joe: General Wesley Clark, I want to thank you personally again, for adding your important voice to this debate.

END (whew, my fingers are achin'... and my oh my, did the General ever look better, or sexier?)

Wes: "In fact, going to Iraq had nothing to do with winning the war on terror. In fact, going to Iraq made winning the war on terror much more difficult."

This needs to be repeated over and over again! It is the heart of what is wrong with Dubya's failed presidency--along with ill-conceived tax cuts targeted to the uber rich!

He kept emphasising the retired officers and generals who are NOW against Bush's Iraq strategy.

59. Blitzer and Woodruff try to interupt him all the time
He's gotten pretty good at talking over them. Lin (is that her name? ...something like that) actualy cut his mike once on an Anderson Cooper special. CNN likes to have him on (he'll be on Blitzer this afternoon), but they don't usually treat him well, altho Blitzer has gotten better. Aaron Brown is the exception--he has ALWAYS treated Clark with respect. Even deference. But he hasn't had him on his show recently for some reason.

MNBC gets mixed reviews from me. Scarborough has pretty much always treated Clark with respect, even when he voices strong disagreement with what he says (which I have heard him do). Tweety is polite to his face, but has said some ugly things about him personally when he's not around to defend himself. Norville has been ok.

As for Fox, they've been pretty descent since he dropped his own campaign, but back then they used to wait until after an interview and then dis him bad. Just like Tweety. All too gutless to say anything to his face. The one Fox asshole who tried (Asman?) he drop-kicked.

69. Well, everything is relative...
I agree, many of the pundits are assholes, & interrupt, etc.

But some of them, you can tell, they treat him differently than they do regular pols.

Tweety, is like the weather...wait a while, & it will change.

Whe he did his Hardball College Tour at Harvard, he told Wes the room was more electric, than for any other candidate.

Aaron Brown, a serious journalist, probably knows Wes better than any other TV person. They spent countless hours together during the war.
And you can tell he LIKES & respects him.

63. If it weren't for Wes Clark...
...and Michael Moore's endorsement (not to mention Clark's refusal to denounce it) Bush's AWOL might still be ignored completely. I sure haven't seen the Kerry campaign doing all they can to exploit it. Not taking it front-on anyway. They have let Clark and others ask the question for them. Clark mentioned it again as recently as his press conference out of DC with Turner and some of the "band of brothers" just a couple weeks ago. But the Kerry campaign was quick to distance themselves from that specific remark. Well, whatever works. I'd like to see 'em go for the juggle more directly, but I am willing to admit Kerry has won more elections than I have, and winning is all I want out of him at this point.

52. Isn't he just amazing? He shocks-and-awes even the Repuke commentators!
It's so enjoyable to me the way they just let him talk and talk and talk, even though they're war-loving flag-waving apologists.

They're in awe of him, they're blown away by his charm, and they respect him.

Wes Clark for Secretary of State! Wes Clark for National Security Advisor!!

55. Thanks for this. Sounds like he was great, as always. Don't you love
the way he can deliver a blow so calmly and matter-of-fact-ly. This "by the way" was great:

"Look, John Kerry was there! By the way, George Bush and Dick Cheney weren't."

And I'll bet he had a smile on his face as he said it. :-)

The General's smile is very effective at disarming his opponents. Another great job from Wes!!

62. What to say???
Wes Clark is THE MAN! I am so extremely proud of him. I am so greatful to have been a part of the movement to draft him. I am so sad that our efforts did not succeed. I am so happy that he is continuing the fight for us.
