Bailout rejection hurts McCain, House Democrats
Candidate from incumbent party faces uphill climb; leaders can't muster votes

"It's hard to make the case, 'Elect me and I'll straighten this out,'" said Floyd Ciruli, a nonpartisan pollster based in Denver. "I think for some period of time here, it's stopping McCain in his tracks."

"Ciruli and others said any bad economic news poses a problem for the candidate from the incumbent party. Regardless of what the Arizona senator did to try and aid in negotiations, McCain's mission becomes more difficult the longer the focus is on the economy, they say. Obama continues to climb in polls as economic conditions worsen, with some surveys saying the Illinois senator has a better chance of reviving the economy."
