Chuck Todd: Anybody in a tight race voted against the bill.
Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 02:30 PM by godai
That's the bottom line on this. The entire House is up for re-election and those voting 'no' see this as an issue which would be used against them.

The agreement prior to the vote was that the Democrats would provide 1/2 the votes if the Repubs did likewise. The Repubs failed to do so.

1. Correct. Anyone with a 401k will vote against the bailout opponents

16. I have a 401K and I'd do no such thing
Unfortunately, my rep is a tool and probably voted yes.

Regards

Maybe they could talk to their opponents and nicely ask them not to make it a campaign issue

That was some good weed...

3. When legislation is unpopular thats whats supposed to happen
The way around that is to craft legislation that helps a broader group than just the wealthy.

It aint rocket surgery.

4. That'll backfire, when people realize they can't get any credit,
and that their 401(k)'s have plummeted.

5. It seems obvious.
Voting for a bailout against the will of their constituents could be political suicide. It wouldn't surpise me to find out that Bushco planned this all to go down right before the election precisely to try to save some Repuke seats in Congress.

I think the outcome would be much different if the vote were held AFTER the election.

7. I suppose they'd prefer for Saudi Arabia, China, or maybe Russia...
... come in and buy our assets rather than our own federal government?

It's troubling... and calling this a "Bailout" is inaccurate, and amounts to nothing more than political theater.

8. And they screwed themselves in the process. Rasmussen already showed opposition weakening.
And after the stock market continues to tumble in the next couple of days, they'll find their constituents pissed at them that they DIDN'T vote for the bill.

19. Thanks!
That helped. There's no rhyme or reason to who voted which way, and I don't even know if I wanted them to vote yes or no. My rep, Sandy Levin, voted Yes and Conyers voted No. I looked at Florida and all the Dems but one voted Yes, including Wexler.

10. Not true. Not across the board.
My congressman is multi-term in a very blue district.
He voted NO on the bill and I'm very curious to hear and learn more about his reasoning.
