C-SPAN is going to rebroadcast the four-hour floor discussion of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act sometime this evening. I saw parts of it when it originally aired live from 930a to 130p today. I was struck by the number of Republicans who spouted economic nonsense in opposition to an essential piece of legislation. Immediately after the floor discussion, which ended with pleas for support from their Minority Leader, Minority Whip, and Ranking Banking Committee Member, they voted 2 to 1 AGAINST the bill.
How could this gang of nincompoops, many of whom apparently consider themselves "mavericks", possibly get anything worthwhile done even if their "mavierick" candidate for President won in November?
I urge you to watch especially for the rebroadcast of Rep Paul Ryan's (R, WI) remarks. He was the "maverick" who apparently convinced John McCain on Thursday to sign on to a crackpot "insurance" idea Paulson already had debunked to Ryan the day before. (see
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x7226185 ). I believe it is this crackpot idea that delayed the House vote until today, when other House Republicans spouted off about loading up the rescue bill with such other non-starters as relaxing accounting rules for banks, suspending capital gains taxes, etc. (see for yourself tonight on C-SPAN).
What's your opinion?
