RNC Stage - Twin Towers beneath Christian Crosses
Sorry the image is so big, it's from the RNC. But I didn't notice the iconography until last night. Those two stands in the foreground represent the WTC. The podium and the side table show large crosses hovering above the towers. It's disgusting and offensive and the GOP should be ashamed.

3. I'm looking for a better picture
The one on the front page of the NY Times shows it perfectly. In this one the Twin Towers are a little dark.

They boasted beforehand that they would use subliminal imagery, including sky scrapers to evoke "New York." Well it's not NY they want to evoke, but DEATH and TERROR.

4. It's subliminable
Oh, by the way, they did NOT come to New York to exploit 9/11. It's just coincidental.

6. They boast about their subliminal messaging:

http://www.nytimes.com/pages/politics/campaignspecial/index.html

While the text of Mr. Bush's speech has been carefully assembled, so has every element of the set like the vibrant red carpet that will blanket the floor of the convention hall, the theater in the round and the lectern, which a convention organizer said had "a sort of skyscraper design" in recognition of being in New York.

These elements are not just about theatrics, though that, too, is part of the motivation, to cultivate interest and increase television ratings for the convention, which starts Monday and ends Thursday, the day Mr. Bush speaks. Campaign aides said the party was trying to send a message about the president, trying subconsciously to build on and reinforce ideas and themes of his campaign, and especially to emphasize the theme of strength.

It's not a lectern, it's a PULPIT. And SHAME on them for placing the Twin Towers on stage. SHAME SHAME SHAME.

11. You can't see the picture?
Or you are not noticing the towers? The towers are reprensented by the smaller wooden boxes in the foreground that the teleprompter stands rise out of.

Most of the pictures online are cropped too high to reveal the towers. They are very visible on TV though.

14. It is surreal.
I don't think this is going to play out well with anyone other than free republic types. Really, I am starting to think that they are trying to lose this election. And while they are doing that, they are cementing the deep divisions amongst certain Americans. I have been played before, I know what it feels like.

16. These "twin towers" are two teleprompters
The boxes hide the computer screens that are reflected in the angled plastic reader boards. You can't blame them for that - it's the only configuration that works for public speakers so they can look at the audience to the left and right and still read their speeches.

But the Christian cross symbolism is surely deliberate and the searchlights in the background remind one of a nation under seige.

19. Please read the NY Times article posted above
And please look at the cover of the NY Times today - the front page photo of Cheney. This is a deliberate evocation of the tops of the Twin Towers. As an artist I'm surprised you don't see it. Look closely. This photo is not as good as the NY Times photo which shows them in better light. I'll look for a better picture.

34. I see what you mean
And as I pointed out, the monitors need to be there, in these positions, for the speeches to be read on the prompters, so although one could make the case that it's a twin tower thing, there really isn't any other way to do it. The monitors are large TV sets placed on their backs and one would have to put something there to cover them.

Plants could be used, I suppose, and therefore avoided the twin towers thing, but I pointed out that it was a stretch to claim these are there just for the twin towers "effect" when there is a practical purpose for them to be there.

Even some of the searchlight patterns on the back could be interpreted as 9/11 twin tower related since they did that anniversary thing with the two searchlights a while back.

I just think there's no need to go too far when there's so much else that obviously has no other purpose than propaganda.

35. This is propaganda too, it's deliberate, they boast about it
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 03:05 PM by Stephanie

And because it's subtle it needs to be brought to attention. I am outraged at the exploitation of 9/11. They need to be called on it. Just because the evocation is subtle doesn't mean we should ignore it. Yes, they may cover monitors. But if you look at the design they are specifically reminiscent of the WTC. Maybe that's not an outrage to you, but as a New Yorker I feel it is sacrilege. Especially because it is so sneaky and meant to evoke 9/11 on a subconscious level.

Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 03:18 PM by Stephanie
I can't find the actual image. This is the full NY Times front page. Sorry. But in this light you can see the design of the boxes. It replicates the towers.

I am trying to convince you because I know you are a talented artist and I think this is important. (I remember when we had the huge logos thread and you came up with "United Against the Bush Regime"). And because it SO OFFENDS me that they would do this.

Here is their boast about using subconscious imagery:

http://www.nytimes.com/pages/politics/campaignspecial/index.html

While the text of Mr. Bush's speech has been carefully assembled, so has every element of the set like the vibrant red carpet that will blanket the floor of the convention hall, the theater in the round and the lectern, which a convention organizer said had "a sort of skyscraper design" in recognition of being in New York.

17. It's almost as if South Park is parodying them

The fist few guys I saw speaking during the day, there for pictures of them "addressing the convention" for their campaigns, almost looked like South Park characters. Just picture South Park showing the GOP convention, round guys with the Southern Baptist preacher hair and decades old glasses.
