Canton Ohio Repository endorses Obama....
Stark Countians rightly want change in Washington. The Repository editorial board believes that the presidential candidate who can deliver on this demand is Democrat Barack Obama.

Sen. Obama's "politics of hope" is a welcome change from Washington's bitter, unproductive business as usual. In these difficult times, Americans need some hope for their future. The rest of the world, watching the weight of war, deep deficits, job losses, a go-it-alone foreign policy and now economic crisis bear down on the United States, needs some reassurance about this country's future.

Some great signal of a new beginning is needed. Obama, far more than his opponent, Republican Sen. John McCain, can send that signal. And then President Obama can get down to business. In addition to wanting to see a new tone in Washington, we have more confidence that an Obama administration can steer the country onto a sounder course than a McCain administration can.

Way to go...

This is good since this is on the fringe between the northeastern mainly democratic area and the middle part of the state which is certainly leaning red...

1. Holy shit! I live in Canton
This is AWESOME. Canton is a blue collar union city which is very socially conservative. Canton and Stark County Ohio have been really hit hard for years on the jobs front and overall economy.

Change is what Canton, OH. (and I) want. Go Repository!

Let's hope their message doesn't fall on stony ground.

Time, way past time indeed, to turn Ohio Blue!

6. They endorsed Bush in 2004
http://www.allbusiness.com/services/business-services-miscellaneous-business/4707061-1.html

In addition to the big-city papers already mentioned, Bush also won backing from the Omaha World-Herald, The Grand Rapids (Mich.) Press, The Free Lance-Star in Fredericksburg, Va., the York (Pa.) Daily Record, The Repository in Canton, Ohio, The Times Reporter in New Philadelphia, Ohio, The New York Sun, the El Paso Times, and Las Cruces Sun-News in New Mexico, and The News-Gazette in Champaign-Urbana, Ill.

7. I knew something was afoot...
This really could be a hint of what is to come...

I think people feel that this is an extraordinary time that requires someone capable of grasping this significance and unite the country.

10. I couldn't agree more
I don't put a lot of weight behind newspaper endorsements... Kerry certainly won that battle in 2004 and look where it got him.

However, the Canton paper seems to want to be on the right side of history this time. And I have a feeling that's going to be contagious among editorial boards across the nation as the weeks progress. :-)

13. They did endorse Bush
and Kerry won by a very slim margin in Stark County. Canton itself can usually go blue but the surrounding areas of North Canton, Massillon and the rural areas south and east are usually die-hard RED.

This is a blue collar town but full of old conservative money like the Timkens, Beldens, etc. The interesting thing is the large AM talk station WHBC has two guys on the air who both rail against Bush nearly daily. (You can stream the audio and hear both.) This radio station used to only endorse the Republican candidates.

One last point, there's also a very tight House race here. Long time Republican Ralph Regula is retiring. We have two state senators Kurt Shuring-R and John Boccieri-D running. Boccieri is a good guy and alos in the Iraq war and is in the reserves now. Shuring actually isn't a tow the line Republican and if he won I could stomach it better than most other Repukes in ohio. But I am donating to Boccieri and have the yard signs.

12. They based the endorsement on his stand on the Iraq War
...
In the realm of foreign policy, Obama said unequivocally in 2002 that a U.S. invasion of Iraq would be a mistake, as The Repository did. It was not a popular conviction, but it was the right one. McCain supported the pre-emptive war, as did the vast majority of Congress.

Now, as the United States labors to extricate our troops, McCain echoes President Bush's aversion to withdrawal timetables, which Iraqi leaders say they want. Obama also wants to set withdrawal deadlines, making his prospects better than McCain's for negotiating a timely U.S. exit.
