Expecting them to do so is just counterproductive because they won't acknowledge that they fucked up at all. They just won't.

It's probably because they are no longer a party of principles and have no long term strategical planning skills at all. Their on the fly tactical skills are to be envied but it also means that their attention span and memory retention isn't longer than 5 minutes, which usually meant a happy marriage with the mainstream media until the advent of the Internet and alternative media like the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
