CNN Poll: Obama has higher expectations to meet in debates
CNN Poll: Obama has higher expectations to meet in debates

From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney

A new poll shows Americans think Obama will win the debates.

(CNN) – It appears Barack Obama has higher expectations to meet at Friday night's debate than John McCain does, a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll suggests.
According to the new poll, nearly 6 in 10 Americans think the Illinois senator will win the debates, while only 34 percent think McCain will come out on top.

But that's no guarantee Obama will be deemed the eventual winner, CNN's Polling Director Keating Holland said.

"Four years ago, voters thought George W. Bush would beat John Kerry in the debates but Americans who watched the debates generally thought Kerry was the winner," he said. "On the other hand, voters thought that Bill Clinton would win the debates in 1996 — and post-debate polls agreed with that assessment."

Obama clearly goes into the first debate with a clear advantage in the issues. The new poll suggests 60 percent of voters say that the Illinois senator aggrees with them on the issues. Voters say they trust McCain more than Obama in international issues like Iraq and terrorism — but Obama has a clear 10-point edge (53-43 percent) on the overriding issue of the day: the economy. (In a CNN/ORC poll released Thursday, 56 percent of Americans said the economy was the No. 1 issue.)

But the two candidates are statistically tied on the question of whether voters feel they possess the personal qualities a president should have (62 percent say McCain does, while 64 percent say Obama does.) And in good news for McCain, voters are also tied on what they care more about in this election — issues or personal qualities. Forty-three percent of voters say that the candidates' leadership skills and vision is more important to them than issues; 42 percent say issues are more important.

Obama has the burden of being known as an intelligent man. He just isn't going to shake that.

Some good polling about what else Obama is known as:

And in a finding suggesting the difficult terrain Mr. McCain needs to navigate as Congress considers the Wall Street bailout 52 percent of respondents said that Mr. McCain care more about protecting the interests of large corporations, compared with 32 percent who said that he cared most about protecting the interests of ordinary people. By contrast, 16 percent of respondents said that Mr. Obama was more concerned with protecting the interests of large corporations, compared with 70 percent said he was more concerned about ordinary people.

70/16 versus 32/52. That is huge.

11. He has to flash that yellow-tooth smile and remind people at least once that
he was a POW to win the debate.

5. Americans know Republicans choose stupid people to lead ...
... but in the past stupid people were seen as having less guile. I think Bush might have changed that.

6. I am tired of polls like these
It sets the bar so high for Senator Obama that anything less than a stellar performance could be viewed as failure.

No offense Pirate...

7. I think Obama needs to just show he is qualified. He doesn't need to knock McCain out.
McCain needs to disqualify Obama or else the Country is going to go with Obama. Obama doesn't need to disqualify McCain.

Does that make sense? Obama just needs to pass the "Presidential threshold". We know he can and will. He is actually ideal for the job.

8. Exactly. People are ready for change. They know Obama means change. However,
they are unsure if he meets that presidential threshold. If they see that he does then they will flock to Obama. I heard the same thing happened to Reagan. People did not jump to him to the very end once they were sure he could do the job.

13. But does there have to be a poll about debate performance before the debate?
I guess it keeps pollsters employed.

9. I would want to go in with the expectations higher for me
That means people agree more with you on the issues and really want to hear what you have to say. Obama will be fine. He has smoothly handled things great so far. McLiar looked nuts at the White House yesterday, Barack looked calm cool collected and ready to work something out.

12. Ironic - Because NY Times and Atlantic Both Give McCain The Edge
Based on his ability to deliver one-liners, talking points, and insults. So long as the debate does not require the demonstration of knowledge of a complex issue, McCain will have the advantage, because McCain will just spit out talking points as noted by NY Times and Atlantic. However, if someone asks McCain to actually explain what is going on in the financial crisis, McCain will have trouble.

14. I know. I'm somewhat surprised (maybe not) because the talking heads have been all about how
good McCain is at debates and how Obama struggles BUT we know that frequently the actual people see things very different from the yapping heads.
