NC SENATE POLL: Hagan 51 (+10), Dole 45 (-8). Liddy is tanking!

In North Carolina, Democratic challenger Kay Hagan has taken a six-point lead over Republican United States Senator Elizabeth Dole.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the Tar Heel State finds Hagan with 51% of the vote and Dole with 45%.

That's quite a change from July when the incumbent held a double digit lead. Hagan had held the lead once before, having pulled ahead in May, but that was little more than a bounce following her primary victory. After that, a television ad campaign by Dole quickly opened a double-digit lead.

Dole was elected to the Senate in 2002 to become the first female Senator in North Carolina's history. She currently serves on three Senate committees, including the Committee on Armed Services. Attorney Hagan is currently serving her fifth term in the state's Senate.

The incumbent is backed by just 78% of Republicans, down 10 percentage points since the July poll. and 26% of Democrats in North Carolina. Hagan is supported by 82% of Democrats, up 11 points. Among unaffiliated voters, Hagan now has a 12-point edge. In July, Dole had a solid lead among the unaffiliated voters (full demographic crosstabs available for Premium Members).

Dole is viewed favorably by 50% of the voters in her state, down 11 points since July. Hagan is also viewed favorably by 50%.

8. It's very good news for Bob Dole.
He'll have someone to go play bingo with.

(I like bingo.)

9. This poll confirms the PPP poll this weekend.
And if anybody is needing coattails, its Hagan. Her numbers were not incredibly high among African Americans in the PPP poll. So maybe some come coattail riding of Obama may help her as well.

11. Or vice versa!
I've met Hagan a couple of times. She's very straightforward and direct. I like that in a politician, or anyone.

It's a tragedy that the first female senator from N.C. was Liddy Dole. She's a disgrace. Somehow I don't think she was kidding this summer when she proposed naming an AIDS bill after Jesse Helms.

I still enjoy watching this meltdown:

18. Or both
Obama has been spending a lot of time in NC. If the campaign were simply looking at a strategy to get Obama elected, that might not be the best use of precious time and money. But he has a much bigger picture in mind. The guy continues to have a vision that is well ahead of everyone else.

Imagine what we can do if we get 57 or 58 Senate seats and the White House. We will be in a position to carry out a real progressive agenda. The last time we had that situation was 1992, but in that case, Bill CLinton wasn't all that interested in moving progressive issues forward. His interests were more focused on maintaining enough power to govern.

Obama is a fundamentally different cat. He is running in order to bring progressive change, as opposed to using the slogan of change in order to get elected.

12. Never thought I'd see a poll like this
I assumed this seat would be safe Republican, but it looks like a real race now, which is great.

15. The Anti-Dole ads are withering, effective and relentless. Plus,
I think that Dole may also be sinking because of the pounds of Botox (snarky, I know, but she is making herself hideous!).

16. I hate polls but this here is Excellent, EXCELLENT news. Dole has been really dogging
Hagen with silly and aggressive smear ads and mistruths. Hagen has been countering with some effective, truthful ads of her own.

I want Dole in the nixie bin in November and these numbers look really good.
