http://www.leadertelegram.com/story-opinions.asp?id=BHPGGHGUFH8The Sunday, Sept. 14, Commentary page was one of the funniest collections of biased opinions I have seen in a long time. Both Todd Berry and Ralph Hudson seem to be somewhat impaired in memory. Neither of them recalls that in 1999, we had for the first time in decades managed to balance the federal budget, had eliminated the deficit, and were starting to pay down the national debt.
Then we elected a phony cowboy from Texas, and interesting things started to happen. First, he rushed through tax cuts that almost exclusively benefited the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans. Then, fully knowing that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction, he lied us into a pre-emptive war in Iraq, primarily for the benefit of the oil companies. According to what the Bush administration said in 2003, the war was supposed to cost us between $50 billion and $60 billion. However, in March Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz estimated the long-term cost of the war will be $4 trillion.
So there you have it. As always, the Republicans and their rich pals came riding in, raided the treasury, and rode off to their mansions in Dubai, leaving us stuck with the tab and telling us we have to suck it up, tighten our belts, and quit whining because for some reason, there is just no money left in the vault.
