I wonder if an enterprising 527 wouldn't mind putting out an ad that would scare the bejezus out of
the type of Republican voter who lived in cringing terror of the communist menace for decades. You know, the kind that let them paint liberals as "commies" here? What if there were an ad in which the socialization of the market (where most people have retirement money invested) is dramatized? Whose standing for you now?

1. Why not one about Social Security and where it would be
if McCain had had his way.

2. That would be good too.
I just think the Rs have overdone the rugged individual myth and somehow people need to be given a wake up clue that, by virtue of the fact that humans are social animals, the "sharing" of money and/or risk, even in a capitalist market, are socialist acts.

5. It works too, because I just sent an email to my Grandparent's-in-law
with McCain's record on military and veteran's issues and even though they do NOT like him or Sarah Palin, they say they will vote for him because they don't want America to become a "socialist" country.

*sigh*

I really would love to combat that old idea effectively, but really don't know how.

13. It would be nice to have a simple set of facts and statements on
this point...."socialized debt and why you should not vote Republican." I wonder if something like this is available anywhere.

14. I had a similar idea yesterday re: Dems protecting SS from Wall Street
Here's the gist: Democrats fought the Republicans for years to prevent SS privatization, and aren't you glad they did, because Grandma's Social Security is still safe? Thanks to the Dems.

This is the perfect opportunity to draw the contrast between how The Dems were WISE and acted RESPONSIBLY, and FOUGHT vigorously to protect Social Security. The Dems can be TRUSTED.

If they had not, people's financial security could well be at risk, having invested their SS in one or more of these great financial institutions (currently in crisis).

Could this be a powerful new ad for Dems & Obama on the economy?

3. Why are people here so worried about ads instead of volunteering?
I mean, we can't do a damn thing about what the campaign or 527s put in their ads. And even if we could, there's no such thing as a "magic bullet" that can solve all of our problems in one fell swoop.

The one thing we CAN do is phone bank and canvass.

4. Know what? I'm leaving in a few minutes for my Obama headquarters

to put in six hours of volunteering today. I can impact some people today, but an ad will amplify the messages we convey individually. That's why.

8. One-on-one contact is something like 100 more effective than ads.
They make that extremely clear in Obama campaign training. Did you miss that part?

Ads merely reinforce a brand. Yes, that's important, but only a salesperson can make the sale.

15. No, "we" do phone banking and canvassing, and trust the campaign to do...
Edited on Wed Sep-17-08 09:11 AM by ClassWarrior
...the right thing with the ads. Because that's the only thing we can do.

Unless of course you're planning on putting up a million or two to start your own 527.

12. I'd like to see an SS privatization ad.
Start with scenes of a plunging stock ticker and scenes of panicky stock traders on the floor. Then show an elderly woman facing an empty cupboard.

"John McCain wants to put your Social Security on the stock market. Does that sound like a good idea?"

16. Yes, I think that angle would be very effective.
And emphasizing the huge battle that went on for years between the Dems & Repukes. That the Dems were fighting all along and can be trusted to protect SS.

John McCain can not be trusted.
