I spoke with Al Gore tonight - Presidental Campaign is "troubling"

Al didn't seem happy with the current situation. Wondered, why are things tied despite 8 years of poor governance by Republicans?

We agreed that there are undercurrents in American politics that are holding Obama back.

72. Just to clarify, i was a member before 2002
... but i think the software changed or something back then so i am not sure how that gets counted. i posted here on 9/11 at around 9:30am after i saw the towers get hit from my bedroom window, so DU has a special place in my heart. I am lurker for sure, and rarely have the time to post much, but read avidly.

i understand why some people would jump down my throat - really i do. but i am just trying to relay some insights from the man we all know won the 2000 election. nothing more.

3. I spoke with Gore right after you.
He said that he felt that Obama was going to win this thing...and win it big.

He said that apart from McCain having no answers about anything, putting this country at risk with his pick of Veep, and being more of the same like Bush, the Republican party will probably be put to pasture for the next eight years, at least.

24. Naw....I was just kidding.
When someone who's been here for 7 years, but has had little say, it puzzles me that they wouldn't identify the function where they would have talked to President Gore.

Knowing where this "Industry Event" took place would certainly help provide some evidence, even if not conclusive.

20. I spoke with FDR tonight., he loves this "Obama lad"
Edited on Wed Sep-17-08 12:50 AM by GrizzlyMan
We had a wonderful conversation over some brandy and cigars. Well, I had the cigar, he was smoking cigarettes and yeah, that cig holder is as cool looking in person as it is in the photos.

At any rate, FDR said Bill Clinton was his favorite post war president, but that he's really excited what this "Obama lad" is going to do when he becomes president. FDR said the race is over, but people don't understand why yet. He said the answers will become clear in the next 2 weeks.

And oh yeah, he loves "Entourage". Can't get enough of it.

22. These are the same undercurrents that held Kerry and Gore back
Both were good candidates in most measures compared to their competition. They even held more in common politically with the Americans than their opponents, yet they were stuck at 48-49% of the vote overall.

Nearly 50% of the voting public in this country are determined to vote for anybody with an "R" after their name no matter what and in 10 years that has not changed. A small percentage is added to this who are racists and might vote for a Democrat.

Obama is skilled enough to overcome this, despite disadvantages he has no control over, he is more skilled politically than his predecessors.

Nevertheless, if you aren't troubled by McCain's support in the polls, then you aren't paying attention. And that troubled has nothing to do with Obama, McCain held similar numbers against Hillary and against John Edwards --McCain was a better candidate than George Bush in 2000 and still he lost.

The problem is with conservatives and the Republican party and their influence.

Someone popping in, and only posting an interpretation of an alleged conversation on the internet isn't something I, or anyone else is going to take seriously.

30. I had a root beer float with Dylan tonight - "Well, it's always been my nature ...
to take chances
My right hand drawing back
while my left hand advances
Where the current is strong
and the monkey dances
To the tune of a concertina

Blood dryin' in my yellow hair
as I go from shore to shore
I know what it is
that has drawn me to your door
But whatever it could be
makes you think you've seen me before
Angelina

His eyes were two slits that would make a snake proud
With a face that any painter would paint
as he walked through the crowd
Worshipping a god with the body of a woman well endowed
And the head of a hyena

Do I need your permission to turn the other cheek?
If you can read my mind, why must I speak?
No, I have heard nothing about the man that you seek
Angelina

In the valley of the giants
where the stars and stripes explode
The peaches they were sweet
and the milk and honey flowed
I was only following instructions when the
judge sent me down the road
With your subpoena

When you cease to exist
then who will you blame?
I've tried my best to love you
but I cannot play this game
Your best friend and my worst enemy
is one and the same
Angelina

There's a black Mercedes rollin'
through the combat zone
Your servants are half dead
you're down to the bone
Tell me, tall man
where would you like to be overthrown
Maybe down in Jerusalem or Argentina?

She was stolen from her mother
when she was three days old
Now her vengeance has been satisfied and
her possessions have been sold
He's surrounded by God's angels
and she's wearin' a blindfold
And so are you, Angelina

I see pieces of men marching
trying to take heaven by force
I can see the unknown rider
I can see the pale white horse
In God's truth tell me what you want
and you'll have it of course
Just step into the arena

Beat a path of retreat
up them spiral staircases
Pass the tree of smoke
pass the angel with four faces
Begging God for mercy and weepin' in unholy places
Angelina

Oh, Angelina. Oh, Angelina ... "

And I said, "Good song, Bob."

He also knows of the millions of new new voters, millions more democrats eager to vote, who may be able to resist or see beyond the TV news chatter.

I've been here over 7 years as well, and it blows me away to hear cries of "troll" anytime someone doesn't like what you post. Doubt that you've been sitting around for 7 years as a troll just waiting for your big moment.

You met Al Gore, I'm so envious... Sounds like he's troubled at the mentality of Americans if, after these disastrous 8 years, it could even be close. Don't know why that would sound far-fectched to anyone.

Nothing you posted tonight was inflammatory to me... I would hope that the people who treated you like shit will apologize... cuz it was totally uncalled for. People here who attacks low count posters seem to believe that they themselves arrived at DU with 1,000 posts under their belt.

sounds like people want to read into it more that what it is. I am simply reporting what one of our leaders had to say in a moment of time during the last 50 or so days of the election.

I wanted Gore to run, still don't know all his reasons but I can imagine he didn't want to run against Hillary and Bill, crap look at how low down that got.

I know how Gore feels, most of us in our heart of hearts feel that way too, how could anyone want more of the same after Bush?

But I think why you got jumped from so many people here is because everyone wants to think Gore will stay positive and hopeful for Obama.

McCain is a unique republican. He isn't really but that has strongly been his image for many years. The honest straight talker, maverick, the war hero, country first. Independents use to like him more that republicans did but now he has the republicans firmly behind him and the excitement of Palin.
The worst of him doesn't get a lot of TV attention (people don't read much, the print media has covered more) His good relationship with the media so long, he called them his base, paid dividends. They are reporting more now about McCain/Palin...the last several days but they seem to work to be "fair and balanced" and try to show how both sides distort and attack unfairly. Really?
And I don't even know what if on Fox but many people watch that including Independents.
But the media sucks which I am sure Al knows about. They dwelt on distortions of what Al said and ignored bush's crap. Here we all know "Obama broke his pledge to take public finances" (in fact he made no pledge to do that if you saw what he wrote) but how many knows about McCain breaking the rules with primary financing? Things like that

You and Al probably know Obama is young, black and has names that remind people of enemies of America and that a large minority think he is Muslim, won't say pledge of allegiance and so on. I don't think any candidate has had such an onslaught of rumors and chain e-mails that site sources (either fake ones or ones that also have the lie)

Obama has run against the Clintons and now the rovian politics. He has been attacked as "just words", no action, empty, no accomplishments, not ready, sexist, evil friended, race baiting and so on by experts. Non-stop.

There is a cost to negative campaigning within your own party, there just is. I like Hillary but I did not like her negative campaign style...kitchen sink AND bathroom sink. I understand she thought she'd be the better candidate and president and that her only chance after February was to completely tear him down. That ABC debate just stunned me because I had never seen or imagined that one of our candidates would try to tie the probable nominee with scary, bomb, 8-11 terror Hamas kind of crap. Beyond things we saw her/them say there was much going on behind the scenes that was even worse.
Although she endorsed him she did not take back anything she said about him. Those who believed her and do not see it as negative campaigning still believe her and also believe she was cheated. I know they are upset Obama didn't do more to quell the talk that they played the race card. He did deny they were doing that whenever he was asked but maybe they wanted some grander speech. He himself never accused them or anyone of racism/
But her never defending him from the charges of sexism or unfair caucuses

I bring these things up because comments after articles are full of these things, people tell me so real life Hillary supporters they know will not support Obama because of X, Y and Z (some of Clinton's campaign claims and how he wronged her) and Hillary only endorsed him because the party made her do it and she is noble.
Obama is doing about the same as Gore and Kerry with republican and Independents. It's with Democrats that he is lower and specifically with Democrats that voted Hillary.

He is about the same percent behind with whites but there are more undecideds in these polls. He does better with blacks and Latinos than they did.
He is WAY ahead of Gore and kerry with young voters and quite a bit worse with 60+. Here is a comparative
18-29 G +2 K+9 O +33
30-44 G -1 K-7 O -3
44-59 G -1 K -3 O +2
60+ G +4 K -8 O -15
So there is that problem with older people and they are reliable voters.

If you compare everything, even small towns and rural, even low income Obama is about the same as them. Obama does better than they did with college educated but no big differences except much better with youth and worse with older people and Dems. Hillary voting Dems.

Perhaps if/as they learn more about McCain/Palin's policies more might come to Obama

I will finish with another part of the media sucks. He lost a lot of potential support with Wright, comments and TV talkers still say he listened to that hate for 20 years. Those clips were played over and over. Well we know all that. So one could question why he went to such a controversial church.

Or one could know it was not a controversial church, it was well thought of and Wright was well respected. We could ask why it sounds like I am making that up or Obama did when he said he didn't hear Wright say comments like those.
Jay Carney (Washington Bureau Chief for Time Magazine) was on ABC "This Week" in late March. George asked him when they'd be hearing more on Wright.
Jay said they'd gotten tapes of sermons going years back and a crew of reporters had been listening/watching them hours per day. They were almost through them all and had found nothing that was that controversial so there was no story.
There was no story?

Obama wasn't even at the sermons that the clips were from...but it was no story that this meant Obama had gone to a church and listened to sermons that really didn't have anything that controversial? The exact opposite of what people were led top think?

That is not a story? I won't even go into the way that non-story might have reduced the hate mail and threats to the church and pastor.

I don't know that there has ever been such a big story presented so one sided, such an extreme and distorted view from a few clips from a few sermon shown as the whole of the story.

It is not that some journalists didn't try. A great 527 could be made up of clips of people who knew/went to/had family and friends who went to that church. People like Eugene Robinson and Cynthia Tucker (whose brother and friends went there).

Tamaron Hall of MSNBC would need her clip included. She was telling Chris Matthews how it'sit's one of two churches you're encouraged to go to when you move there. She'd gone there for some time.
She told him she'd never heard that kind of language and had checked with more than a dozen people who still regularly attend there and they didn't hear that language and it shocked them.
Matthew cut her off by saying that it was "hard to believe."
And Flavia Colgan on Larry King trying to tell him that a lot of local reporters from the Chicago papers who went there and many other members of the church she had talked to were shocked by the clips of Wright because they said "this is not the pastor that we knew." Larry cut her off too.

There are more but in every case they were cut off or ignored completely. It never led to a discussion, not even a single question.

The Rev. Jane Hoffman (who is white) is a minister at another church but she and her husband attended Trinity. She said she spoke with many reporters but they lost interest as she talked and nothing made it to print. She assumed that was because her experience was positive.

I could go on... but this is just crazy.
It really is. A great wrong was done.

So I am not surprised it is all tied up. You can tell Al for me.
