Op-ed From McCain's Cousin: "My Cousin John Is Long Gone"
Edited on Mon Sep-15-08 11:13 PM by kpete
Cousin John, where did you go?
In print: Sunday, September 14, 2008

A part of me is made very sad to write this article. As I've said, my family has followed John's life and career with no absence of pride. If there ever were a Republican we might consider voting for, it would have been my cousin John.

But, as he continually demonstrates in this campaign, my cousin John is long gone. "Straight talk" has been replaced with "flip-flop." Saddest all, this is the same man who, when campaigning in 2000, told a crowd of supporters, "I don't think Bill Gates needs a tax cut. I think your parents do."

My parents, John, need some help after the economic destruction Bush has wrought in the last eight years, but it's clear you're not the one who'll give it to us. America's working families no longer recognize you, nor does your own.

5. "...a desperate version of himself who seems to contradict nearly everything he once stood for."
With all due respect to the author, I'm not convinced that the candidate of 2000 stood for much of anything worth admiring.

His cavalier behavior in the Navy, his history of leaving his wife for a rich, well-connected piece of arm candy, his involvement in the Keating Five scandal, all reveal an arrogant, irresponsible, and cynically ambitious man. John McCain was always willing to say whatever he thought would win support. The only difference between 2000 and 2008 is the national mood. McCain hasn't changed, at all.

9. Very well-written piece.
And great it's from a bona fide liberal Southern Democrat, and was published in Florida.

saying they lost their home because they used the money on booze, drugs, etc.

18. OMFG.. a 527 needs to get on this quick..
Obama can't touch it.. he'll get his "Family is off-limits" BS thrown back at him in a second.. but an outside group can use this to make a great ad. When your own family won't stand up for ya.. who will?

But.. while i'm thinking about it.. why do I think this is some disgruntled cousin or uncle who's ticked that "cousin John" won't give him or her a dime of Cindy's money?

Family can be a fickle bitch sometimes.

Doing "Cousin John Is Gone".

Somebody here can come up with new lyrics for the old tune.

(on Edit)

Here you go:

Jackomo feena hey – Jackomo feena hey
well baby you don't like what the Republicans say you just
Jackomo feena hey

Well my Cousin, Cousin, Cousin John is gone
Hey now, hey now, Cousin John is gone

Well I remember the morning well, you see
(Cousin John is gone)
Well I remember when he started his candidacy
(Cousin John is gone)
Well I tol' you he turned in the primaries
(Cousin John is gone)
and he joined the far right of the GOP
(Cousin John is gone)
talkin 'bout Cousin, Cousin, Cousin John is gone

He passed a campaign bill with Russ Feingold
(Cousin John is Gone)
But after this his very soul got sold
(Cousin John is Gone)
He was once mighty brave on immigration
(Cousin John is Gone)
Then he remembered his party likes segregation
(Cousin John is gone)

He has some big friends in the Media
(Cousin John Is Gone)
And they all protect him like the Mafia
(Cousin John Is Gone)

Keep on singin about Cousin, Cousin, Cousin John is gone
Cousin, Cousin, Cousin, Cousin John is gone.

(With apologies to Aaron Neville if he's actually offended).
