Colin Powell: An Obama win would be "electrifying"
Edited on Mon Sep-15-08 08:36 PM by scheming daemons

The election of an African-American president “would be electrifying,” Powell told a George Washington University audience, “but at the same time (I have to) make a judgment here on which would be best for America.

“I have been watching both individuals, I know them both extremely well, and I have not decided who I am going to vote for. And I'm interested to see what the debates are going to be like because we have to get off of this ‘lipstick on a pig’ stuff and get into issues,” he said.
.
.
.
“I have voted for members of both parties in the course of my adult life. And as I said earlier, I will vote for the candidate I think can do the best job for America, whether that candidate is a Republican, a Democrat, or an independent,” he added.
.
.
.
Another source close to Powell said that he has known McCain for more than three decades “and likes him, and is looking for a reason to vote for him. He hasn't found it yet."

9. Because Colin Powell's a War Criminal, that's why!
We shouldn't want the Democratic nominee associated with anyone who's likely to be detained for war crimes if he's stupid enough to leave the country again.

16. YEP ...
This isn't setting well with me - this guy sold out BIG TIME with Bushco, and has taken at best tepid responsibility for it. Iraq may or may not have happened without him, but his going along with it lent credibility to. He has A LOT of making up to do. There is no reaason for him to be hesitating and actingt all high and mighty about it.

11. The debates will be key.
I think a ton of undecideds are waiting. I'm not a political expert, by any means. However, Obama needs to have a Come to Jesus with McCain about his integrity. The whole election could ride on that.

He's known McCain for 30 years... and yet he STILL hasn't committed to voting for him.

That's damning.

"He's just endorsing him because he's Black" retort that the McCain Camp would start to whisper.

Unfortunately, I don't blame him. Of course, that would never be implied of a White General of Former SOS endorsing McCain....but you know, White Privilege is called White for a reason.

17. Since back in March Powell endorsed Obama on CNN by saying, "We should have talks."
And he basically defended and laid out Obama's plan as sound and something any leader should be thinking of doing. Wolf Blitzer even had him reconfirm this and he said he fully stood by that. He did say he didn't endorse or vote for anyone. But you basically got a clear idea of where he was going.

18. I wish Powell would endorse McCain. His endorsement is worthless.
He sold out and lost his integrity years ago. If he supported Obama, and Obama accepted it, the media would be all over Powell's part in enabling the invasion of Iraq, which Obama opposed. Let the war enabler support the warmonger. They deserve each other.

Here's one that shows that Powell's favorability rating has never been below 69%

Here's one RECENTLY that shows that Independent prefer Powell to McCain 44% to 21%:

YOU may not like him.... but his endorsement is political gold in a tight race.

Powell is hated by the far left and the far right.

But the 10% in the middle love the guy.

The goal is to win this election, not make decisions that are only liked by the 40% on the left.

It may help undecideds swing to Obama late in the election.

31. I don't care much for Powell but...
...many independents and undecideds do look up to Powell and do care who he endorses. And, as close as this election looks like it's going to be, we need as many independents in our corner as we can get.

32. Maybe Powell is waiting till after the debates to endorse, to have more of an impact
I've got a theory on why Powell hasn't endorsed yet.

1) He could really be undecided, or at least think he could change his mind from the debates

2) If he waits until after the debates are over what big events are going to happen to make people forget about Powell and give Obama or McCain a bounce? If he does it before the debates then people could forget all about Powell's endorsement after seeing a strong or weak performance from one side in the debates.

3) If Powell endorses after the debates it either gives his choice a bit of rope to try to recover from the debates if they hurt them, or it helps secure his pick's win in November if the debates helped his pick take the lead.

36. What DUers think of Powell doesn't matter for the purposes of this election
Not one bit. Whatever his reputation is around here, his is a voice undecided white voters respect and feel comfortable with. This is no time for purity. We have to kneecap these fuckers "BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!" in the timeless words of Malcolm X. As long as Powell doesn't turn up in an Obama administration, fine.

Whatever any individual DUer may think (and I am a Scandinavian style social democrat) there is ONE imperative and that is to beat Grampy and Rapture Holocaust Barbie. ANYTHING that enhances the chance of that is to be welcomed. ANYTHING, as long as our candidates themselves remain true to what THEY have said.
