U.S News: "John McCain's Journey From Maverick to Liar"

John McCain's Journey From Maverick to Liar

September 15, 2008 12:14 PM ET | John Aloysius Farrell |

There is a good reason why John McCain's campaign is having some trouble with truthiness these days.

McCain's claim to be a "maverick" rests on the liberal positions he took during the days when he openly fought with Republican leaders and the party's conservative base.

Because he cannot very well motivate Republicans by reminding them of the times he and they have quarreled, he has to distract and dissemble.

Think of the breaks that McCain has made with Republican orthodoxy.

He joined liberal Russ Feingold and pushed for campaign finance reform—conservatives loathed it.

6. If it does make print, those annoying one-sentence paragraphs will have to be fixed first.

4. It's true, McCain can't get along with his own party, so how could he ever build a coalition?
He can't, it was all just a fake act about how he would "reach across the aisle" to work with Democrats.

We are now seeing how much McCain despises one Democrat - Obama.

And Johnny Mac laughed last year when someone called Hillary a bitch around him.

And Johnny Mac voted to impeach Bill Clinton in 1999 on both counts.

So, the entire charade of "reaching across the aisle" was just horseshit.

5. I'm not familar with this author, but do DU'ers see how big this is becoming?
This is US News. This lying business is starting to resonate. When I describe to people the political tilt to the three major newsweeklies, I tell them that Newsweek is the closest we have to liberal, that Time is center of the road and US News IS conservative.

This is getting exciting.
