Stopping 2008 Voter Fraud -- Registered Voters Database/List Exist?

I dont recall the exact terminology but back in 2000/2004 elections people were turned away from voting because they were deemed invalid in part thanks to clever Republican tactics. Is there some online tool for people to use to verify they are fully and properly registered to vote rather than finding out on the day of the election?

Is there some registered voters database that one can access to build up a lookup list for the average person to check up on? I'd be happy to compose a website service if i had such a database listing.

I don't know about other states, but in California, every county has its own website for the Registrar of Voters and registration verification is accessible through that.
