If Palin is forced off the ticket,
Edited on Fri Sep-12-08 06:57 PM by ProSense
what would the impact be on McCain's campaign?

On edit: AK Judiciary Committee Votes to Authorize Subpoenas in Trooper-Gate, Including for Todd Palin

"PALIN'S 'TROOPERGATE' SCANDAL.... This controversy really isn't getting any better for the scandal-plagued vice presidential candidate."

1. What makes you think that's going to happen?
She's the only thing he's got going right now. In fact, she's really damaged our message. So, I don't see why he would get rid of her.

15. Isn't that obvious at this point?
She's distracted everybody from what we're trying to say and has actually gotten people to start talking about whether or not Biden "should" really go after her in the debate, lest he look like a mean old man while little Sarah Palin shines on like a picture of rugged frontier womanhood. Or something like that.

Yes, I'd say she's rallied their base and thrown us off our game. The day before they were going to announce the Republican VP pick I really hoped it would be Romney or Lieberman, because that would have been Waterloo for them. When the announced Palin, I knew that would be trouble, and it has been.

20. I don't think that at all.
I frankly don't buy that focusing on both Palin and McCain does anything to Obama's message. The stuff about the debate is handwringing.

McCain's faux outrage couldn't gain traction. In fact, the "lipstick on a pig" worked out well by focusing to some degree on what Obama meant. Score that for Obama.

Everyone has called McCain out on lying. He's lying, trying to cheat, etc., and that doesn't give me the impression that he has a lot of confidence in his campaign.

30. My reading of the MSM tells a different story.
Palin is getting a lot of positive press as an "American mom" who faces problems like other "American moms" face. The crowds that are coming to see McCain *because* the Republican base is excited by her are being compared to the adoring crowds that once flocked to Bush II.

I really haven't seen "everyone" calling out McCain on his lying, as you wrote. What I *have* seen is a re-mobilization of the Republican base, and that's scary this close to the election.

Any hard-nosed criticism of Palin (in the debate or elsewhere) will be viewed by that base as an unfair attack on an "American mom."

It may be great fun (not to mention really easy) to lambaste Palin, but it will assuredly backfire.

No matter what may come out about her, they will spin it to their advantage and the MSM will play along with them.

3. She won't be.
It's a bad choice either way. She stays on, her continuing gaffes and baggage call McCain's judgment into question. He replaces her, it calls McCain's judgment into question for naming her in the first place. (See: Thomas Eagleton.)

He's stuck with her. Hopefully we as a nation won't be.

So do you know what will come out of the current investigation, and why Palin and the Republicans are trying so hard to shut it down?

They'll spin her b.s. into gold and they'll make it up as they go. If they kick her off the ticket, they piss off the base.

For about 4 hrs today every group of the RR including Hollywood Types
who are Christians (Stephen Baldwin) plus other Conservativce Groups
filled C-Span Airwaves with their joyous message--Sarah Palen.

It is a waste of our time and hurts the Obama Campaign for us to
obsess on her.

21. No set of circumstances, including footage of her having sex with three guys
is going to move her off the ticket.

Anything that comes up they will deny deny deny deny and then deny.

If she leaves the ticket there is nothing left.

There may be a possibility that McCain gets thrown off.

She has resurrected the GOP fund raising campaign and from their point of view they know that she is going to lose but she is helping them do better in their congressional races.

"She has resurrected the GOP fund raising campaign"

The RNC reported $1 million during their convention.

McCain is now in the spending limits period.

26. There have been several reports saying that there has been a sharp
spike in donations to congressional republican campaigns.

It is clear that the fundamental base of the party, which has been sleep walking through this entire year has gotten excited. It won't last but she will become a favorite fund raiser for the party much like Ronald Reagen did before he ran for President.

22. Gawd
Read this thread and it makes me sick to see so many folks saying that Palin is winning.

Instead they should be doing everything they can to take her down. She is never more vulnerable than she is right now and folks oughtta fight her now while the fighting can work.

She is a fundie plant on the ticket. Another Bush. If she gets away, it'll be the folks laying down like those on this thread who will be at fault.

23. You need to look at what happened in 1972
when Eagleton was forced off the Democratic ticket. It was a real disaster, although the McGovern wasn't going to win anyway.

I originally thought that she would be forced off the ticket because she's so incredibly incompetent and unsuited for the job. It doesn't look like that will happen. That said, I do hope Obama gets out lots of ads pointing out her total lack of real experience at the kind of level you'd think would be needed to be VP. Plus, with any luck at all Biden will destroy her in their debate.

28. Please. She's not going anywhere, unfortunately.
The recent non-stop press coverage of her, though (even the negative), makes me long for the days when Lindsay Lohan was in the papers every day.

Dropping her would be like admitting a mistake, which McCombover isn't capable of. Besides, who could he replace her with that would make him look better?

Simply rejoice in the fact that Caribou Barbie is the cream of the Republican VP crop. That's good news for us, not bad.

31. Interesting question, but I don't think it will happen...
If Palin were going to be dumped it would have been within a week of her being named to the ticket. Given the movement of the investigation in Alaska, I think it will be two weeks before the negative press hits a crescendo. At that point, can McCain dump his running mate in favor of someone else? A month before the election and after the VP Debate? Not hardly.

The hell that McCain is in right now is that he has a running mate who will continue to be a bigger and bigger liability to his campaign, but a running mate that he can't get rid of without ruining whatever chance he had to win this thing.
