Big Media's Big Palin Push
Edited on Fri Sep-12-08 11:01 AM by Patsy Stone
I am one of the angry left. I’m angry at the direction in which this country is going. I’m angry about our status in the world, and I’m angry at the proclamations from our leaders and journalists that mediocrity is good and we should all strive to be Betas, because Alphas just have to work too damn hard.

Right now, however, I’m also angry with the media and the Republicans for trying to pass Sarah Palin off as an eminently qualified, viable alternative to politics as usual; someone ready to assume the mantle of leadership of the free world on day one. This, mind you, based solely on her thin resume of public service, a Bachelors degree in Communication from her umpteenth university (finally!), and the fact that she can see Russia from the edge of her state. In fact, I'm not just angry; I'm furious.

Let’s get serious; she wasn't even ready to sit down and face the press on day one. The campaign is so worried about her lack of experience they not only gave the press a two week head start on her with no rebuttal, they also demanded the media agree to treat her with the deference due a woman of her stature in the world when she did deign to address the public's questions and concerns, or else no soup for you! In other words, “Please don’t hurt our little trinket at least until after she has a chance to learn the difference between Freddie Mac and Bernie Mac, ‘k?”

Give me a break.

I would have thought the open secret of her Eliza Doolittle-like crash course in world politics (complete with flash cards), her carefully scripted media availability, and the campaign's accusations that any criticism is due either to sexism or the belief that we have nothing more than a leftist, Commie press in this country, would have sent up cries of derision up from the media and the country; but, no. Once again, the media lap dogs find themselves begging for scraps and more beatings, and cheering wildly while they sell the RNC’s latest dangerous and defective product to the country. Still basking in the marketing success of such crowd pleasers as The Iraq War; George Bush’s Second Term; and Wiretapping Makes You Safer: No, Really! the media now brings you Sarah Palin – The Little Mayor Who Could! A Lifetime movie sponsored by the RNC and the corporate media: no longer interested in keep you safer or more informed. Additional underwriting for this product launch was also provided by BP and the NRA.

The same people who brought you "Obama’s inexperienced and the country has a right to get to know him better." Now bring you "Experience is for suckers and just look at her adorable button nose!" The same people who brought you Reverend Wright on a 24-hour loop now bring you "Religion-smigion!" Forget the secessionist groups and the scary proselytizing because she’s got a bunch of zingy one liners and that’s good enough for me!

Experience? Experience is so two weeks ago. Now it’s all about personality, not issues or experience they tell me. She can breastfeed a moose while negotiating funding cuts for teen mothers! She can wrestle Castro to the ground while shooting some caribou! And isn’t she just precious, ladies and gentlemen?! Is she ready to be president? Who cares? Mika needs to know where she gets her glasses!

There are millions of people in this country who know that Fannie and Freddie were private companies until last weekend, and I'll bet a large subset of them also know what the Bush Doctrine is; some even have a degree in Communications. (Hey, I just described myself!) Are they/we/I, then, by extrapolation, more qualified to be VP than Sarah?

But let's not forget -- she's not just a Wal-Mart shopper who may not be up on the news, she's the governor of one of these United States of America.

Begging the question: how many other US governors are as equally uninformed about current political events and the country's economic situations? If this is a trend instead of a fluke, we may be in bigger trouble than we thought.

Taking the cue from Big Pharma who, legally, don’t have to tell you the medication’s side effects unless they tell you what it actually does, the media obviously intends to only show us ads and infomercials filled with shills ridiculing us for wanting to discuss issues with Palin running on the beach at sunset, or through fields full of fuzzy bunnies, until we are compelled to vote for the un-vetted panacea because then, and only then, will everything will be right with America.

Do they feel any responsibility to their country? No, I guess not. They want us to forget about the lack of international experience or familiarity with the problems facing large urban areas, asking instead, "Wouldn't you just rather walk on the beach and smile that knowing ‘I’ve got a secret, and it’s all in this little blue pill!’ smile?"

I heard Willie Geist the other day on Morning Joe quoting Tom Brokaw: "If they pull off this magic trick, it will be one of the greatest in the history of elections." Um, great for whom? Is that what we're supposed to root for? Is that good for America? I think not.

Any national media worth their salt would balk at the presumption that a small town mayor and/or the Governor of the 48th most populous state in the country is a perfectly fine choice to be a 72-year-old heartbeat away from the Oval Office. Sadly, self-awareness is the one thing no one could accuse the media of suffering from.

"Bruce Lee, patron saint of self-defense, pray for us." – Tripper Harrison (Bill Murray) in Meatballs.

(This is an update and partial re-post of a dKos diary I wrote the other day. I thought the anger would pass and the media would wake up. For a few hours it seemed possible, but after some of the reviews by some pundits of her interview, the anger is bubbling again this morning.)

5. It's very obvious---Big Oil, Big Media want a one-party country
And of course, that party is the Republican party. The older I get, the more I learn and listen, the more I realize how 'money' talks in this country. It's so very sad to see people like Rush and the other hate-mongers with such big audiences.

26. All she has is lies
and talking points she can't seem to memorize. Going back to the same well of flash card responses won't wear well with anyone who understands the issues. Thankfully, a lot of people out there know more about how this country works than she does. Hopefully, they are registered voters who are as outraged as I am.

6. Nominated - seriously pithy summary of why Palin is not legitimate
as a Vice Presidential candidate.

You hit upon a word I found myself giving a lot of focus to yesterday. That word is legitimate. I am so tired of the arguments regarding experience. The definition of that word "experience" has become subjective. I am abandoning it for the word "legitimate" which encompasses all of the qualities I feel make a person eligible to be considered for higher office. Encompassed within is educational achievements, community service, legislative accomplishments, ability to think independently and speak coherently extemporaneously on pertinent issues affecting everyday Americans, and a comprehensive, clear understanding of the Constitution of the United States with its inherent rights delegated to both citizens and States. Last but not least also embued within the definition of legitimate is an appropriate amount of related experience on a large scale which enables one to grasp the difficult complex issues one must confront with holding a major office.

In this regard, George W. Bush* is not a legitimate candidate for higher office in the Country. Sister Sarah floats somewhere beneath his ranking. For interest groups, political parties and others to promote an illegitimate candidate for higher office, for instance, in a Presidential office, in the furtherance of simply their own self-interests, should be regarded by the American people as a red flag to stand up and protest that selection as an outright threat to the safety, security and well-being of this Country.

11. I nominate you!
Just from that post, I have no doubt you would have been a better choice.

I am stunned and saddened to see they would offer up this sham of a candidate at a time in history where we need serious people with real ideas and sensible solutions. America doesn't need another war, we need a path to peace and prosperity.

If they end up pulling the wool over America's eyes this time, I'll have an extra bedroom in Costa Rica you can crash in.

Thanks for the props!

Edited on Fri Sep-12-08 04:55 PM by Samantha
I am outraged that John McCain would pick someone so inappropriate for the Office of the Vice Presidency to run with him. He has sacrificed the security of this Country to take a risky gamble on a number 2 who could possibly enhance his chances to win this election. Together they run under the very questionable mantra of being "mavericks" so the public at large will forget they are Republicans. Yes, Republicans. We need to shout that from the highest rooftops. THESE TWO CANDIDATES ARE NOT MAVERICKS BUT REPUBLICANS. THEY -- DARE I SAY IT -- CAN PICK LIPSTICK ON PIGS IF THEY SO CHOOSE BUT THEY ARE BOTH TRUE PORKERS OUT TO DISADVANTAGE THE AVERAGE COMMON MAN OR WOMAN TO THE BENEFIT OF THE VERY WEALTHY.

I am so furious at this selection, and my rage grows each day I learn more about her, my anger at McCain just deepens with the passage of time. I absolutely cannot handle the thought that he might possibly win this election, and we will stuck with the two of them for four years. I might have to take you up on that Costa Rica offer because I don't think I will be able to tolerate four more years of Republican rule.

Thanks again for posting your wonderful thread. We need more outrage expressed over this cheap dirty Republican trick McCain has pulled. It smells like a Rove maneuver ... but that's another rant for another day.

Sam

Postscipt: did you nearly barf when you heard Palin discuss her neoconservative foreign affairs views (reading from the flash cards, of course)? She is dangerous. AND HOW EXACTLY DO THESE VIEWS OF HERS REPRESENT CHANGE?

20. The talking points she managed to memorize
were the most basic, dishonorable tenets of the NeoCons. The only thing we can hope for is that if, heaven forbid, they win, she won't understand anything she's memorized, anyway. I guess...

My blood boiled twice during the parts I've seen, actually. The first was when she said she didn't know if this war was a task from God when Charlie gave her the Holy War question. Her answer? I don't know whether it's God's plan, Charlie."

Um, Sarah, it's not, alright? Even little ol' me knows that. God doesn't want war. At least most people's vision of God or a higher consciousness doesn't.

Also, when she said she didn't hesitate for a moment when she was asked to be VP? I totally believe that, and that scares the crap out of me. Not a drop of self-awareness there.

The full interview starts here any second. I've removed all the stuff from around the couch that could be used as a projectile.

22. You've said it exactly.
There is nothing but outright scorn for the mainstream media and when the media does their customary navel gazing, guess what? It's your fault for being so banal that TV ratings are so low and that you guys are no longer THE authority on news. EVERYONE knows just how incompetent the media is and the disconnect when it comes to Sarah Palin just emphasizes that.

Obama's talking point about McCain being out of touch can also be applied to the media.

You just inspired me to completely turn my fear into righteous anger. We actually cried at the beginning of Part 2 last night on 20/20, only to find myself screaming a her when she was talking about Bernie Mac.

I freakin' dreamed of wolves last night, definitely because I watched that ad last night before bed. I woke-up this morning feeling spent from this emotional roller coaster the Republicans have put this country on. But after reading your post, I finally feel more focused on what we are up against and what I need to do to make sure they do not get away with this.

As Randi always says, "The media has been canceled". That Brokaw quote speaks volumes to this.

30. Try and make that anger productive, though.
The fact that she's even mentioned in the same breath as "Vice President" should send shocks through the spine of any rational person. Ask people when you speak to them if they're comfortable with the thought of President Palin, and ask them whether or not they think America deserves better than that.

I have to admit, I was scared she would turn out to be the Alaskan Horse, filled with an underplayed and unanticipated intelligence. After the first interview clip I watched, I felt a lot better, and a lot worse.

I've learned to never underestimate the tendency of the American public to be interested in something shiny and new for a few weeks. That's why it's so important that the pundits and the commentators are not left to spread the idea that she's remotely capable of leading the country.

Between you and me, I still think we're gonna win this. :)
