NYT slams Sarah Palin in their ABC interview review
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 10:06 PM by ClarkUSA
At times visibly nervous, at others appearing to hew so closely to prepared answers that she used the
exact same phrases repeatedly
, Ms. Palin most visibly stumbled when she was asked by Mr. Gibson
if she agreed with the Bush doctrine. Ms. Palin did not seem to know what he was talking about. Mr.
Gibson, sounding like an impatient teacher, informed her that it meant the right of “anticipatory self-defense.”

There'll be no next interview. They're probably trying to come up with a way to get her out of the VP debate as I type.

I don't know what Independants or swing voters read-- but it's kind of bad when you can find even guys like Joe Klein carrying on about McCain-- or Philip Klein, for that matter at such places as The American Spectator.

42. Sadly, you are right.
People who remain undecided aren't exactly they types who are swayed by reason or policies... 'cause the differences in those areas are stark. They're the ones who are swayed by gut feelings and campaign noise.

So, sadly, it'll take many more public embarrassments like that interview for there to be any effect. Heck, just look at what an idiot Bush was during his campaigns, yet he won twice.

Palin does not know what the hell she is talking about.

She has been hidden away for a week while being coached with GOP talking points. Her answers really did not make alot of sense. Palin could not answer most of the questions and kept beating around the bush.

37. "Decades and decades in that Washington establishment?"

"We’ve got to remember what the desire is in this nation at this time. It is for no more politics as usual and somebody’s big fat résumé that maybe shows decades and decades in that Washington establishment, where, yes, they’ve had opportunities to meet heads of state."

Um . . . How many decades has John McCain spent in that Washington establishment?

Yeah, wouldn't want Joe Biden going head to head with Putin. Alaska's so much closer.

Big fat resume?

Experience bad, desire good!

My God, if this whacko gets in we're all doomed!

I can just see her putting the pillow over McLaimebrain's face and telling Naevius Sutorius Macro he died of natural causes.

40. Author let her skate, a bit, on the Bush Doctrine discussion
... but then I haven't seen any review of the interview get it right.

My feedback to Rutenberg, on his article:
Thanks for your analysis of the Gibson/Palin interview.

One question, though, in regards to the "Bush Doctrine" discussion...

Even after Charlie Gibson explained the premise of the Bush Doctrine to Gov. Palin, did she not fail to understand it? From what I can tell, the response she offered goes no further than what international law allows a country relative to self-defense: evidence of an imminent threat. (Palin: "...enough intelligence that tells us that a strike is imminent against American people, we have every right to defend our country")

No one would argue such a case. But that's not what the Bush Doctrine calls for with "anticipatory self-defense", or preventive war -- where "imminence" is not a consideration.

I've seen no review of the Gibson/Palin interview that recognizes this failure. The Governor did not know what the doctrine was, and even when explained to her she did not recognize the key factor being the absence of an imminent threat. Anyone with a basic sense of civic responsibility, who voted in the 2004 election, let alone responsible for a state's National Guard, should have long ago learned and understood this distinction.

But then what should we expect from someone who recently said she hasn't thought all that much about the Iraq war.

46. Dysfunctional Family
From what I have read so far, the Palin family appears to be one of the most dysfunctional families in the nation. I don't have to repeat what has been discovered so far. But, I couldn't help from remembering what St. Paul had to say about those who sought to be leaders in the Church. "For if a man does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of the Church of God?" (1 Timothy 3,5) I believe that this has even more application when it comes to wanting to lead a nation. For those who say that the family is off limits, I respectfully disagree when it is obvious that it is grossly dysfunctional. When she shoved her two older kids into the limelight as some example of her superior parenting skills expressing how proud she is of them she opened door that has resulted in their being exposed as less than desirable products of a family out of control.
