I have a question
My hair stylist called my mom and asked her if Obama is going to or has passed a law allowing abortion at all stages and that the government is going to pay for it. Is this true. My hair stylist is a reading a book where it was mentioned.

Concern noted.

8. Google it. If you need help knowing if the source is reliable, this ex-librarian will be
happy to help, just post in this thread.

If you can't do it yourself, then maybe the internet isn't the right place for you; especially this gloves-off forum.

14. No, it isn't true.
If your hairdresser wants some proof, try SNOPES.com, and this will probably come up with something.

Please try to overlook some of the more nasty responses you're getting. Most DUers are really helpful. I just think some are a little edgy lately.

15. Obama against partial birth abortion
Voted yes for other abortion laws. Read it here:

http://www.ontheissues.org/Social/Barack_Obama_Abortion.htm

Does that satisfy you? Next time do your own research.

17. First of all, ONE person cannot "pass a law". Laws are written by legislative bodies, which means
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 05:46 PM by scarletwoman
that in order for a proposed law -- which is called a "bill" -- to go on the books, the bill must first be voted on by all the members of that legislative body. In the case of the federal government and most states, there are two "houses" in the legislative branch, the House of Representatives and the Senate.

If a majority of both houses votes "yes", then the bill is sent over to the executive branch -- the president in the case of federal government, the governor in the case of state government -- to be signed or vetoed.

If the executive vetoes the bill, it goes back to the legislature, and they have to vote to override the veto. If there are not enough votes to override the veto, the bill dies, and no law is passed. If there are enough votes to override the veto, then the bill becomes law.

If the executive signs the bill, then it becomes law right then and there.

An individual member of the legislative branch can write a bill, sponsor a bill, co-sponsor a bill, and/or simply vote for a bill. But NO individual member of the legislative branch (such as a Senator, which is what Obama is) can "pass a law". Your hairdresser seems to have no clue about how our government actually works.

18. Here is an Obama statement on late term abortion:
"On an issue like partial birth abortion, I strongly believe that the state can properly restrict late-term abortions. I have said so repeatedly. All I've said is we should have a provision to protect the health of the mother, and many of the bills that came before me didn't have that."

This quote is from his appearance on Fox News Sunday on April 27, 2008.

This is a good website for comparing the candidates on the issues. You can access all of them from this page.
