ACTION ALERT: NBC Washington bureau chief suggests media powerless
Time to contact NBC.

Thank you Media Matters!!

Summary: NBC News Washington bureau chief Mark Whitaker said that the controversy over Sen. Barack Obama's "lipstick on a pig" comment "seems like a frivolous story" but it is "important to watch" because it's an example of "how good the McCain campaign is at ... driving the news cycle day after day." He acknowledged no media responsibility in choosing what they cover.

1. Why isn't it seen as OBAMA driving the news cycle? It was his attack, after all.

2. Why can't the Democratic candidate ever drive the news cycle?

3. No it's an example of the media allowing itself to be led along
once again on Republican misadventure while at the same time claiming they are victims of such misadventure.

4. They decide to cover political nonsense "against their will"? Because

it's "important" in terms of watching campaign strategy, not because the public needs to hear about it? We're doomed.

5. Lynn Sweet yesterday called it "catnip for the press" ...
....referring to the lipstick talking points coming out of the McCain campaign.

Catnip is largely irresistable to a cat, and makes the animal crazy.

I guess that's an apt analogy. These daily skirmishes are cheap and easy to cover, write themselves because the RNC sends tip sheets, and don't require any brainpower or journalistic expertise.

Shame on them for being used thus. Shame!

It's dereliction of duty, really.
