Missing ballots mistaken for trash

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL -- Are the 3,478 missing ballots inside of a landfill?

Were they inadvertently thrown out by elections officials who thought they were trash?

NewsChannel 5 has exclusively learned that is the leading theory on officials' minds.

We've learned that the ballots in question, likely came from a precinct in Boynton Beach.

They were collected, as all the ballots in the county were, and the put in zippered bank-like bags.

For safety they are then loaded into duffel bags for delivery to the board of elections.

We've learned that at this particular precinct elections workers ‘ran out’ of duffel bags, and black plastic garbage bags were instead used.

Our sources tell us a sheriff’s deputy assigned to deliver the ballots shuttled the plastic bag, or bags, with the ballots in them to the Board of Elections and handed them over.

4. It's a mix....
but it depends on where they came from. East of 95, it's predominately black. Way out west, affluent, the center, elderly, and the Jewish communities. I'd say it's a fairly even mix though number wise.

That way no ballots get "disappeared". The system is entirely transparent.

10. That's what any democracy does.
Which certainly proves we're not living in a democracy under the Bush administration.

Why else would the sherriff be delivering them?

17. Question?
No one seems terribly surprised here (actually I'm not either) but I haven't a clue what voting year they're talking about?

Does anyone know?

18. This year, our local election...
Here is the original story;

West Palm Beach, FL--Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Workers along with Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputies will join the office of the Supervisor of Elections to locate thousands of ballots missing from the August 26th primary election. The group of about 50 will search the more than 500 polling places to search for the ballots. The results from the original poll numbers and the results of the recount showed a 3,500 ballot difference.

Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections, Arthur Anderson, his staff, the canvassing board, and now Florida's Secretary of State are trying to duplicate the original vote total of 102,523 ballots cast on primary election day. A recount turned up only 99,045. Just yesterday, elections officials thought they shaved down the number of missing ballots to just 700. By Thursday night, the figure ballooned to more than 2500.

According to elections workers, the canvassing board is expected to certify all of the election results with one exception. The race for Palm Beach County 15th Circuit Court Judge between William Abramson and Richard Wennett will not be certified. Just 60 votes seperate the candidates. Once elections officials locate the ballots, settle upon a benchmark number of ballots that were cast in the election, then count votes for each candidate, the canvassing board will be able to certify a winner in the race.

And this one;

23. I'll assume it's from 2000
But it really doesn't say what election it's from. It just says the missing ballots.

Seems like over the last few years, there's been plenty of missing ballots.

25. Watch out in FL in Nov
Keep watch on your coastlines, dumpsters, and for the sound of shredders.
If it's close, they will start tossing ballots and it will be up to you to catch them.
