Obama doing better than Kerry in 43 States
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 09:59 PM by Quixote1818
If you look at how Kerry did and compare those numbers to where Obama is in each state, Obama is doing better than Kerry in all but Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Michigan and New York I believe. And the change in each state is not small. He has expanded upon Kerry's leads in most states by anywhere from 1 or 2 points to 10 points. I shouldn't count Massachusetts because Kerry was from there. Even in some red states Obama has cut 25 point Kerry losses into a 10 point difference.

There is NO WAY McCain is leading in the national polls if Bush squeaked by Kerry and Obama has had huge gains across the country from Kerry's numbers.

3. Obama has always strangely underperformed in Massachusetts
One of the few states he polls much worse than either Gore or Kerry.

Of course, Mass. is so Democratic that he'll still win by 10+ points.

Theories? Lingering racism, the fact that Obama has had problems with working-class white "ethnics" and Reagan Democrats -- people forget there are actually a lot of those in Massachusetts -- a lot of socially-conservative, working-class Dems who are often quite right-wing in their views. Also, Gov. Deval Patrick, also African-American and very close to Obama, isn't that popular right now, and his campaign was very similar to Obama's, so there could be some guilt-by-association.

6. MA is known for its racism, particularly in Boston.
Only racism explains this. White liberals can be the most racist people because they don't think they are. Growing up in the American South, I was never under any illusion about how white southerners felt. Somehow you knew where you stood with overt racism. The racism that exists in the North and Pacific West is of a different kind and often worse because they dishonestly paint themselves as more enlightened.

11. I disagree
As a black man, I feel a lot more comfortable living in Boston than I know I would in many other places, e.g. Los Angeles or anywhere in Ohio.

12. Very interesting...
I'd like to hear more about this. I've always heard that Boston is just horrible when it comes to race relations. I've been to Boston several times and I didn't notice anything overt.

14. I live in a fairly nice area though
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 11:28 PM by endthewar
In the Back Bay area. Perfect place to live in when you're in your 20s. I do know that not too far away are some not so good places, like Dorchester for example. I think that most people view Boston as a safe and nice city because it's designed in a way that you don't have to travel through "bad" parts of the outlying parts of the city. I'm pretty sure that if I lived in Dorchester my opinion would be very different. Also, the police really aren't that bad. I went to visit Pasadena a few years ago and felt like I was being followed by the police everywhere.

Also, I've been surprised at how many McCain ads I've been forced to sit through. Cheney is hated more in Boston than perhaps any other place. If McCain wants to waste his money here, that's fine by me though.

On a side note, there's some politician named John Sununu that is getting HAMMERED with ads in the Boston area. He's a Republican senator from New Hampshire I think. I don't know what his polling looks like, but if his staff finds out about the commercials being ran against him they won't be sleeping at night. They've pretty much joined him at the hip with Bush and Cheney.

19. Ah...who can forget John Sununu? If this is the son, he's worse than his father
ever was.

Boston seems like a 'Tale of Two Cities.' South Boston v. the Rest of Boston. It's very intriguing.

Thanks so much for sharing. If you live in a "young" area, it's probably a bit more progressive. I think the young folks will show us old fogies the way. Before I die, I'd like to see no more 'isms." Not sexism, not racism, no homophobia-ism. ;)

21. The country has a LONG way to go to get rid of the "isms"
That's definitely one of the pluses about living in the Boston area. I think it seems so progressive mainly because it's "young", as you pointed out. Whenever I visit relatives who live in the South though, I'm always reminded about how divided parts of our nation is and how not everybody is open-minded.

One thing I wonder about is when do young people change from Dems to Republicans in general? Kerry had a huge youth movement just like Obama does (but even more than Kerry). So I'm wondering if the future will pretty much be ruled by Democrats since all the youth are going for Obama, or if young Dems slowly become more Republican as they get older.

26. Than Los Angeles?
That surprises me. We are so multi-racial. Nobody cares what race you belong to in my area of Los Angeles. Sometimes I think that no race has a majority here. We just all live together. It may just be my part of the city.

I mean, only in L.A. do you read about a black man being pulled over for an improper lane change.

30. Yes. Often. That is pretty much everywhere.
The mayor and City Council are trying to do something about it in response to inquiries from civil rights groups, but I don't think they are making much progress.

10. Media coverage here in MA
McCain has made a lot more ad buys so far it seems (at least in the Boston, MA area). Obama knows that MA hates Bush and Cheney as much as any other state does, so no worries for him here.

I don't buy the guilt-by-association bit with Deval Patrick. I guarantee that most citizens in MA couldn't even name him as the governor. So goes the American people.

4. ... and four of those states were going to go red regardless.
Of the remaining three, Massachusetts and New York are in the bag for Obama. Michigan's close but I'm fairly confident we can pull it off.

Thanks for the enlightenment!

Realclearpolitics.com has a map/table that will show you how Obama compares to Kerry's final numbers.
