Obama needs our money!!! He is struggling right now......
he counted on Hillary supporters to help him in a very ambitious Fall campaign, and it hasn't happened.

Obama needs our help!

(Andrea Mitchell interviewing Claire McCaskill (D-MO) on CNN......that is where I got this)

I think a lot of us gave early (I know I did) and after all that news about how well fundraising went for him, I figured I didn't need to give more.

Forgive me for being too cynical, but I've been thru so many elections on DU in the past 7 years, that new posters proclaiming our candidate to be "struggling" seems a bit.. questionable.

I'm just sayin'

fly 2 planes around the country. Think about that. I think that's probably their biggest expense, next to advertising.

25. Indeed...Obama has not announced the August take yet, so where this is coming from
is anyone's guess.

Salon's article today on "Obama's Money Troubles" pinned blame on the DNC, but that was referring to the July numbers. So, where the OP is deriving this is a mystery.

13. .I read an article yesterday..
from the New York Times referring to this. I don't know what to make of it, but for sure I will be re-upping...

The Obama campaign does not have to report its August fund-raising totals until next week, so it is difficult to tally what it has in the bank at this point. A spokesman said that August was its best fund-raising month yet and that the campaign’s fund-raising was on track.
-----------

In a campaign swing through South Florida over Labor Day weekend, Mr. Obama’s vice-presidential running mate, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., met with several small groups of major donors and sent out an e-mail appeal to supporters of his own unsuccessful presidential campaign, as well as to Jewish supporters. The effort brought in more than $1 million in four days.

Campaign officials expect their Internet fund-raising engine to ramp up as the election approaches. And they hope that much of the high-dollar fund-raising can be done without Mr. Obama. In the New York area alone, there are some 18 events planned in September, all with surrogates, including Mrs. Clinton, Caroline Kennedy and Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico.

24. The Red State Blue State Issue
I think one of the problems is the Red State Blue State issue.

If the message to the Red States is that you can't make a difference for Obama in your State then volunteers and voters get discouraged.

I myself continue to give but as a volunteer have been told we have to cover our own cost for campaign materials, flyers etc...

So many are discouraged.

There should be no Red States when it comes to getting volunteers and voters energized.

We have to have the audacity to believe that we can help OBAMA get into the White House.

Sublimally and sometimes not so subliminally the message is that this or that State will not go Blue for Obama.

I think there are voters who will not go out to vote for other candidates when they know that their vote for Obama will not count.

I imagine this is a problem with all general elections.

It may be having an impact on fundraising efforts by the campaign.

If you can move to Europe in November, then you can afford a $2,500 hedge against that now.

What type of staffing would be such a drain on the millions? What is the typical
income of these paid staff? I always believed the people running these local offices were
volunteers.

38. no, you can't run a campaign on volunteers
Obama has something like 30 offices in Ohio and VA. (fivethirtyeight has done a couple of articles on the number of field offices over the last couple of months. It is also a huge part of the 50 state strategy)

My son has worked as a paid staffer for several campaigns. One of his early jobs was to organize volunteers and interns and get them out for the candidate. He said it was the worst job because volunteers can be very unreliable. You always schedule for more than you need, 2 to 3 times what you need, in the hopes some of them show up. It was a full time job just to organize the volunteers and interns and keep them busy.

This is what we did wrong before, IMHO. We, the dem party, relied too much on volunteers instead of paid staff. If you are getting paid, you will be there. You will be dressed appropriately, you will not be chewing gum when talking to voters, you will be a polite and knowledgable representative of the candidate. And you'll work long hours. The last 2-3 months of the election my son puts in 15 hour days, 7 days a week. No volunteer does that.
