2. The reason it's close is a lot of people don't like candidates they perceive as liberals
It's that simple.

4. The only numbers that matter are the state-by-state comparisons
and electoral vote totals. Overall nationwide numbers are a red herring.

6. What I'm seeing around here ...
They're afraid of the black man with the funny name and all the "things that are coming out about him" (yeah, those hateful emails). They watch Fox noise and believe the lies. Even the Dems. It's so frustrating. They don't care about real issues and they're more afraid that "Obama will sell the country to the other countries" (What the hell does that mean?) than they are of anything McLame would do. There's no reasoning with them. :banghead:

7. I have worked in some campaigns and it pissed me off when ....
... our side would try to appease the dumb ass fundy vote (btw my uncle
was rector of an Episcopalian Church) .... that vote is gone ... let it go
and work on getting the majority of people who think like we do ....

the idea that America is really a conservative contry is smoke and mirrors

We are like 58 to 61 of the population

8. Welcome to America.
The land where up is down and day is night! Whatever thinking people would do, the country as a whole will do the exact opposite. Democracy simply does not work when the electorate is mostly uninformed fools and cretins. The 10-20% of us that are smart have absolutely no influence on anything political.

From here on in, it's all morons. Get used to it.

9. Having suffered through the 2000 and 2004 elections
I won't get overconfident. I also know the country is divided between conservatives and progressives. But my gut tells me Obama/Biden will win in a landslide. And here's why: (1) overwhelming sense that most Americans, regardless of their political affiliation, think the country needs change, and in the end, I think most of those who are undecided will conclude that Obama/Biden is the better choice for change; (2) Republicans never seem to understand how nothing matters more to Americans than jobs and economic well being, and despite the Republican's efforts to put a positive spin on the economy, it's clear that most Americans are either hurting economically or at least anxious about their economic future; (3) I have never seen the level of interest in an election as I've seen from young people this cycle--I don't know if they'll come out and vote, but if they do, it will be a huge factor; and (4) presidents are elected by the electoral college, and although the popular vote may be relatively close, I think that Obama/Biden will win many of the "battleground" states, leading to a huge win based on electoral votes--and that conclusion is based on the unprecedented fundraising ability of the Obama campaign, a very able and savvy campaign team with a long term plan, Joe Biden's ability to win over the blue collar voters in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Hillary Clinton and her supporters being energized in response to the Palin pick, much higher voter registrations among Democrats than Republicans, a huge turnout of the African American and Latino voting blocs, and finally, an extraordinarily able and charismatic candidate whose time I believe has come. Bring on the debates!

While I'll continue to worry until November 5, and won't stop doing what I can to help, I believe in this campaign and I think we win big.

10. Who says it is?
And do you trust them?

Hate to sound like a conspiracy nut, but there's an awful lot of people invested in a close race.

14. True, but people keep asking the same irritating question over and over again:
Edited on Sat Sep-06-08 03:17 PM by Liberal_Stalwart71
Why is the race so close? Why can't Obama close the deal? These were the same questions asked during the primaries and people keep glossing over the truth.

It's about race. There's nothing he can do about it. He can't make himself white.

So here's the solution, and I and many of us have been saying this over and over again:

We have to make sure that TURNOUT among the young, new voters, blacks, Hispanics, Jews, etc...you know, the entire Democratic base including those disaffected Republicans and Independents, is HIGH.

If turnout is low or not high enough to offset the Bigot Vote, the we're doomed.

Bottom line: stop asking this stupid-ass question about Obama. We know what the real reason is. Now what are we going to do about it?

And, by the way, why can't JOHN MCCAIN close the deal?

12. I'm far from being a presidential historian, but hear me out...
First let me emphasize that I am NOT comparing Sarah Palin to Andrew Jackson. What I'm trying to do is get my mind around her APPEAL to so many, and that's where I see some parallels between Palin & Jackson.

Jackson was a Washington outsider. He was, I believe, the first non-aristocratic president. His schooling was spotty, but he knew enough law to practice it on the frontier, and was smart enough to get himself elected. He is celebrated as a self-made man.

Palin is Washington outsider. Palin is perceived as an "average" or "typical" American with typical family problems. Her spotty schooling is not an issue, because she is smart enoough to have gotten herself elected as governor and selected as VP candidate. As far as "frontier" is concerned, this is iconic, at least subliminally, in the American mind. What part of the U.S. conjures up more of a "frontier" idea than Alaksa? Finally, she is considered a self-made, and very self-reliant, woman.

I can't stand her. But she's gonna be trouble in this election.

Just my .02.

16. The trouble isn't just her...
It's the fact that our side is so wimpy about taking people down. The right wing doesn't pull any punches trying to undermine and make our candidates unelectable. Our side tries to play nice and we end up losing. Palin could be made a lot less likable in the eyes of voters if Democrats were willing to take the gloves off and go after her. Where is Hillary? Where are the ads tying her to corruption and extremism?

17. Have to look soberly at what this country is
Close to 50% really love the Bush Palin agenda. If it weren't for the rest of us, that group would have their way and would have a country that looks like, oh, Stalinist USSR only with corporate instead of state control of means of production and fundamentalist Christianity instead of state Communism as the official religion.
