Bankrupt, broke and underemployed - someone please donate to Obama for me...
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 10:44 PM by sfwriter
Hi all,

I need someone to donate to Obama for me. Doing it through here would be great:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/outreach/view/main/mgpfundraising

I just read this TPM post and it sums my feelings up pretty well.

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/09/obama-retrieved-my-vote-palin.php

I was mad at Obama after the Telecom immunity thing, but Palin cinches it. There is no way I can stay on the sidelines. That pretty well sums up how I feel, but after three layoffs in our family and having to declare bankruptcy this week, I have nothing to give.

As a journalist, I'm cobbling together a living out of freelance gigs and part-time work. We have no budget for food and a four year old daughter. I have no way to pay for health insurance in October, so I may lose my health care before the election gets here.

Seriously though, don't worry about me and send Obama a few dollars. You'll have my thanks. I'm on a busy neighborhood corner and am going to see if someone will send me a yard sign. Missouri is moderately Republican, but every vote here could mean one more vote McCain has to worry over. This state has polled even a couple of time so far. A sign in my yard would do some good. If you have one in your yard in California, consider sending it my way.

If you have been on the fence about sending more money, then think of my 4 year old daughter without health care, eating out of a soup kitchen this October and please send Obama a few dollars. Maybe the cost of two movie tickets, a month's cable, or a nice meal out. Please forgo a small luxury and make a donation on my behalf.

Thanks,

Sandy

6. I'm in Springfield Missouri...
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 10:44 PM by sfwriter
We moved here from San Francisco and it has been a disaster. It has quite probably ruined us for a while.

On the upside, this is a battleground state, so a yard sign here is more valuable than one in California. I'm hoping to track one down.

Thanks for kicking in the extra bill there. You have my thanks.

9. I would organaize, but I'm about to take on two more jobs to make ends meet.....
I'm applying for jobs as a dishwasher, security guard, hotel clerk and delivering newspapers. If I can get two of those, I should be able to keep my health care.

Like I said, I'll be OK, but the opportunity to stop McCain is finite.

12. Find me a yard sign... That is the biggie. I need Nixon and Obama.
My wife is looking for graphic design work. I'm looking for writing or nonprofit work. I teach and attend classes on Wednesday, so that day is out but any other time works. I also write freelance and she does freelance design, so if you hear of something like a brochure, business cards or ad copy needing done, email me through DU.
I'm hoping to get some grunt work to cover the bills. I'll be back washing dishes and delivering papers at 40, but so are millions of others with college degrees. You never think it will be you.

And yes, Springfield is rough. I have seen more crappy business and usury practices here than anyplace else I've ever lived.

Pleased to Donate to Obama for You
Hello sfwriter. I will donate $100 tonight in your honor. I enjoy DU tremendously though I seldom speak up. I found the site in 2004 and have been around ever since. DU motivated me in 2004 to get involved and open my check book. I live in Indiana and am so proud of the success we had in our house races in 2006. We're working hard to turn Indiana blue for BO this year. I hope good fortune finds you soon.

Count me in! And I hadn't planned on giving anymore until reading your thread. I think I will make this my biggest contribution.

15. A nice post
I'm sorry to hear about the tough times. I am volunteering for the campaign and giving what I can...I will make an extra donation in your name.

It's important to get the message out about the economic issues, as your post so eloquently illustrates. And a well written letter from someone with your skills could help someone else who's struggling but doesn't understand the differences in the economic plan of the two candidates. If you find yourself able between your many responsibilities, it would be great if you would fire off a letter to your local paper, if you haven't already.

We lost our health insurance 6 months ago and it sucks. I hope for all of our sakes Obama wins this election so we can begin to restore this country. I wish you and your family better times soon-- and hope someone sends you a yard sign! I just put mine out front and I'm in a RED state. I bought mine for 7.00 from the local office, btw, which was a lot cheaper than the ones you order online.

Personally, I was VERY excited to put it out there. We had a sign ceremony. I live next door to a Republican senator's family. This will not go over well, but I am past being polite. :-)

17. NOW, I remember YOU!
I lived in Kansas City for over a decade and HAD to move to Florida in April.

I REMEMBER YOU!

I remember your many posts a few years ago, as you were getting ready to move.
I remember that you got a lot of help from fellow DU members who lived in Missouri.

I got to tell you, I donated to DU in your name on a whim.
Now that I know its someone who's posts I've been reading for a few years, I feel it's KARMA!

Enjoy SF!

25. Easily the worst year of my life...
On top of other things, this is the last month or so.

I had friends in that church shooting in Knoxville, my goddaughter died in a car accident along with four of her friends in Nashville the last week of July and my grandmother died two weeks ago in Knoxville. I burned up my savings going to funerals.

When I got back here, the paper had laid of 11 people and I lost my steady freelancing gig as they rolled it back in-house and gave it to a reporter who used to be my editor. So much for the promise of a job there this fall.

We declared bankruptcy Thursday and today we learned my wife didn't get a job we were hopeful about. She has been laid off several times the last year and it has been shocking the way these Missouri companies behave.

But seriously, don't worry about me. If you are free to volunteer, do it and I'll appreciate it while I deliver papers, work as a security guard or wash dishes. I can always find work of some sort, but I won't have my life sorted before election day.

sfwriter and the next time I donate to Obama-Biden I will definetly think of you and others who are going through the tough times now. Your OP is an eloquent reminder of the instability so many are experiencing after 8 long years of bush-cheney.
