Let's cut out all of the sleazy tactics against Palin.
We should not use gutter politics. Those are puke tactics and we should be better than that. Remember that Obama has promised a new type of politics that avoids these types of tactics, and he has rightly said that we need to leave Palin's family out of it.

Instead, let's stick to the issues. She is virulently pro life and opposes abortion even in the case of rape and incest, she favors off shore drilling and drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, she is anti-gay, she favors more tax cuts for the rich, she supports staying in Iraq forever, she is totally inexperienced and doesn't know squat about foreign policy, etc, etc. We can get her on the issues. We don't need to resort to sleaze such as speculating about whether or not she has had an affair and whether or not she gets along well with her daughter..

59. Every time we keep clean and "above the fray" and the Rethugs play dirty,
we lose.

I no longer care if we fight dirty in this election cycle. After we win and Obama and a solid Democratic majority takes office, maybe we can come up with rules of engagement for the next election so we can fight clean and win.

But right now, we don't have rules of engagement. More importantly, the Republicans don't operate under any rules of engagement. They're sliming us with every dirty trick they've got, so I feel more than justified in hitting them back below the belt.

I don't care if it's lying, cheating, slimy or even misogynistic. We have to do what it takes to win. Our nation cannot withstand another four years of neocon rule. We have to do absolutely anything and everything it takes to beat those fuckers down. Hate them, dehumanize them. It helps.

Let's break the bimbo!

3. Just remember where "we should be better than them"
Got John Kerry in 2004. Wake the fuck up people. Politics is a dirty business. You want to win? Then you have to get down in the mud and fight it out. Yes spouses and kids off limits. Candidates -- NO WAY. Anything they've done IN AN OFFICIAL CAPACITY is fair game. Sometimes I get so sick of this shit at DU that "we are better than them". Well you know what? The moral high ground is great but it doesn't win elections. Make up your minds if you want to WIN this time or not.

7. Thank you! Some people don't get it... Taking the high road is the path to failure.
Always has been... this "pardon me, but do you have any Grey Poupon?" stuff doesn't work. we do NOT have to compliment the other side before we criticize them. Kerry was far too civilized for what they did to him...

Voters don't hear the niceties, they hear "Obama is... " "Biden did..." We are attacked daily by the paid off media pundits (google Armstrong Williams scandal), and the negative stuff, like a rumor in a small town, spreads.

And we are simply discussing what's already out there.. We didnt' start this, it came out of Alaska and Extremist Barbie's list of enemies.

of politician and that old type of politics doesn't work anymore. If I thought the sleaze would work and get Obama elected then I'd be OK with it, but IMO those tactics will backfire on us. The reason why I am calling for sticking to the issues is because I sincerely believe that this is the way to win the election, not the other way around.

Seriously... are you serious? Were you around in 2000? 2004? How about 1992 and 1996, those had some lessons on how to run and you could read a transcript of the whole durn campaign and not hear "high road" mentioned once.

You go take the high road and lose. I say we take the winning road, and the standard is that we attack with every thing REMOTELY BELIEVABLE rather than just "true" or "clean".

38. Not sure if I agree with you or not. I do agree that
"Anything they've done IN AN OFFICIAL CAPACITY is fair game", but I don't consider that to be inconsistent with not attacking her family.

Sorry but I'm still raising a son and the "anything it takes to win" just doesn't cut it. I've spent too much time play hard but play fair, fight hard but fight fair, study hard but don't cheat. When he gets older I don't want him to lie to make a sale, or cut a design corner that results in an unsafe product but no one will notice til later. (I know that these are "different", but the salesman and product designer probably think that their situations are "different", too. "They're just selling a car or designing a toy, not electing a president.")

Maybe that is part of what makes me a Democrat. (At least in my mind it is one (of many) reasons that I'm not a repub. Can't stand their tactics.

"The moral high ground is great but it doesn't win elections." I would tweak that to add "ALWAYS" after "doesn't". Nothing guarantees a win. I know that expressing a desire to tear the repubs' eyes out may make you a "better" Democrat than me, at least in some people's opinion. While I'm a Democrat, I also have to look at myself in the mirror and my son in his eyes.

So I leave the sex lives and parenting skills of Palin, her husband, and her children in your capable hands.

28. I respect the concept but it assumes everyone votes on issues
but the fact we're sitting on the verge of a potential 6th Reagan term says otherwise. The majority of people don't back the Republicans on almost any issue but they've won the White House 28 out of 40 years and we've seen Chimpy sit for two terms.

Sometimes the luster has to be knocked off for people to even turn to the issues.

stick to the issues and avoid this other stuff. Almost every thread at DU right now is about some sort of scandal concerning Palin such as whether or not she had an affair with her husband's business parter. But I see very few threads discussing important issues. What about the mortgage crisis? What about Darth Cheney's saber rattling over Georgia? What about the high cost of energy? Let's talk about this stuff, not the sleazy stuff.

Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 03:49 PM by Phredicles
as far as I can tell it's a place where people who vote more or less the same way can get together and talk about (mostly) political stuff. But are people really deciding how they'll cast their vote by what we say here? I can't recall anyone saying, "I was all set to vote for Kerry until I saw where on DU someone accused Bush of taking it in the back door from Jeff Gannon. That is just so sleazy."

Barack Obama is a very great man, and I'm excited to have the opportunity to vote for him. I've already donated his campaign the most money I've ever given a political candidate. But I don't work for him or his campaign. And I will talk about whatever I jolly well please, whether it's "on-message" or not, thank you very much.

Edit: fixed bad typo.

Of any of this stuff, we stand to shoot ourselves in the foot.

This is trash politics. ANYONE with an ax to grind can make comments that Palin is racist, Nazi lover, or whatever. And while I may believe it true, unless we have irrefutable evidence then we look like slime meisters, basically acting like Republicans.

If someone has real evidence lets see it, but because Ralph Redneck in Idaho said, "Palin is a Nazi" simply does not make it true.

56. Sorry, I have nieces of child-bearing age and sons who will be 18 all too soon.
I'm not about to risk letting a doddering old war-monger and Caribou Barbie slink into office. Fuck nice! If I could obtain a sample of Charlie Manson's sperm, I would find a way to smear it in Bristol Palin's thong, alert the media, and then pay for the DNA test.

61. If the sleaze is true print it and run it up the flagpole, if not just print it
Her handlers said no press for two weeks yet her snarky lies show up daily from garden club type fundraisers? She's NRA and can't defend herself? Gloves off this is the culture war that better be won and not pissed away in apologia.

Whitewater? Swift boat? The doggone TRAVEL OFFICE? PORNOGRAPHY in the congressional record on your dime? (with a bizarre repressed male fantasy of object sexual penetration reminiscent of the False Mick Jagger/Marianne Faithfull MARS bar load of crap. What is it about Republican oppressors that make them want to stick stuff where it doesn't belong?LIES http://www.snopes.com/music/artists/marsbar.asp)
I firmly believe that Lewinsky 'confession' regarding the moist cigar was a LIE

Nice is for sponsoring band camp. This is culture war and THEY CHEAT.

WTF who is John McCain to PUNISH CNN? f -them. They are a just bunch of bullying pandering loudmouths with no shame and about a jigger of decency that they use up when they tip 10%: not including the drink orders

64. You're More Interested In Winning A Good Sportsmanship Medal Than The White House
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 08:12 PM by Paladin
Your wimpy, "we're better than that 'cause we play by the rules" mindset is what gives Karl Rove and Dick Cheney ecstatic hard-ons at night. Your kind of attitude plays right into the Repub's hands---they depend upon it and use it against us. Over and over and over again.

If you and Democrats who share your views don't have the stomach for a gutter fight, then get out of the way of those of us who do. Because that's exactly how this one is going to be won or lost. Obama is right in staying above the fray; the rest of us face no such constraints....

66. Separating the Regressives from the Progressives
The good folks who are what they profess to despise show up in strength when topics such as the so-called Palin scandals are discussed.
