Free Advice for Democrats
Free Advice For Democrats
04 Sep 2008 02:50 am

I'll have more to say about Sarah Palin's speech at some point tomorrow - I saw it live, from the press stand in St. Paul, which was perhaps not the ideal venue from which to judge its television impact - but based on the reactions I've heard and read to date, let me just reiterate the advice that Reihan offered to Democrats when she became McCain's pick for veep: Do not attack her. Stop referring to her as a just a small-town mayor and a neophyte governor who's unqualified to be President; in fact, stop referring to her at all. Attack John McCain, John McCain, and John McCain. Attack him all day, all night, and on weekends too. Behave as though Sarah Palin does not exist. Pray that the media will find some Palin-related scandal even more shocking than the perfervid theories aired this week (they'll be looking for one, no doubt), and in the event that they fail to do so, do not under any circumstances allow yourselves to be drawn any deeper into a debate (which the McCain campaign plainly wants to have) over the relative qualifications and accomplishments of Barack Obama and the Republican vice-presidential nominee. Nothing that's happened this week has changed the fact that it's going to be very, very hard for the Democrats to lose a race between Obama and McCain - and as a result, the Obama-Biden ticket has vastly more to gain from changing the subject away from Sarah Palin than they do from placing her candidacy, her qualifications and her background front and center in this race.

1. I think the only ones attacking her are the blogs.
And, Obama certainly has no control over that.

3. I know. It's hard not to attack her after the way she attacked our
candidate, but I agree with Ross Douthat. SHE should not be our focus. She is a very well placed distraction and nothing more.

5. Because she is nothing more than a lightning rod used to distract
everybody. I think she'll go down and as I said in my other post, it's hard not to attack her after what she did. I can hardly refrain from using expletives when I talk about her. She has spit in our eyes and raidse our ire, but in doing so she has taken all of our focus and the media's focus off of our causes and our candidate. That, I believe, is exactly the plan.

8. Hit her but keep her on the backburner
both can be done. When she's hit then immediately tie it to McCain's poor judgment, crappy temperament, and CLEAR practices of putting politics before people and principles.

and

LEAVE THE EXPERIENCE DEBATE THE FUCK ALONE!!!

Because it's an extremely weak tactic and exactly what they want.

7. I just got this in my inbox from The Atlantic.com
I thought it was an interesting viewpoint and in theory I agree with it, so I thought I'd share it. I've been around here a little while. Troll, I am not.

10. Maybe we should frame it as McCain picked her as a distraction
because he was afraid to go against Obama. He needed something to distract people from looking at the issues.

Leave Sarah alone! It should be an all out attack on exposing John McCain as the fraud he is - and just a product
of Conservative Party thinking.

McCain hasn't changed anything in 26 years - why would he start now? Attack, attack, attack John McCain!

Kill the head and the body will die!
