Can someone tell us about "wet starting" an airplane engine? What IS that?

2. from what I have read here before (I am no expert)

the pilot pushes a button that dumps gas into the engine before starting. Upon starting the engine then shoots out a flame due to the excess gas in the engine. Since deck personnel must stand behind the jet upon starting they get a 'little' scare.
From what i read he did this on the Forrestal and it caused a bomb to ignite on a plane behind him that then set off a chain reaction. I know not if that is true.

7. When I was in the Navy

We were shown the "Fire on the Forrestal" video ad nauseum. IIRC, the fire started when a missile came off the rail of a parked aircraft. I believe McCain's aircraft was parked TOW (tail over water) so a wet start would not have caused the inferno.

as can clearly be seen on the Forrestal video. Absolutely NO fault of John McCain's. He screwed the pooch thousands of times-just not this one...

3. It's where you allow fuel to pool in the engine before you

ignite it. Gives a hell of a bang. Not smart to do. Sometimes can be done accidentally if a pilot does things in the wrong order.

On edit: It would probably get a commercial pilot fired.
