ROFLMFAO!!! No really. ROFLMFAO.

A lot of people were asking tonight: what the hell was that mansion up behind John McCain tonight during the first part of the speech? As I noted below, the TV close-ups only showed McCain's head against the grass in the picture, which made it look like he was reprising his famed green screen performance. And when they panned out, it looked like McCain was showing off one of his mansions.

Well, several readers have written in to tell me that the building is actually the main building on the campus of the Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood, California. And sure enough, this page on the school's website makes it pretty clear that they're correct.

1. Is it possible that his callow and detached handlers . . .
Are so ignorant of the concerns of ordinary people that when someone said "Walter Reed" they didn't know what was meant and just looked it up on the Internet?

16. In a Late Update, TPM's Josh Marshall speculates the same thing...
Late Update: I'm surprised this hadn't occurred to me. But several readers have suggested that perhaps one of the tech geeks charged with setting up the audio/visual bells and whistles for the evening was tasked with getting pictures of Walter Reed Army Medical Center but goofed and got this instead. At first I thought, No, that's ridiculous. This is a major political party with big time professionals putting this together. Nothing is left to chance. I mean, is this the RNC or a scene out Spinal Tap or Waiting for Guffman? I still have a bit of a hard time believing they're quite that incompetent. But when you figure in what appears to be the utter lack of any logic for this school being behind McCain and the fact that it has 'Walter Reed' in its name, I'm really not sure you can discount this possibility.

This is SO Daily Show material. Faulty googling by RNC idiots can't tell the diff between a Middle School and the Walter Reed Medical Hospital.

Every single Vet in America will understand immediately. (Maybe THIS is where all the money for repair work went!)

10. I didn't watch the speech, but if he was referencing his POW years,
that would make sense. It was supposed to be Walter Reed Hospital where he recovered from his injuries. OMG - these people are foolishly incompetent.

12. That is really funny
I'm just trying out google to see how they came up with that photo.. Googling Walter Reed obviously brings up the building that McCain was supposed to be talking about. I doubt he knew what was going on behind his back though, for all his oldman-itis, I would suspect that he has a smidgen of an idea of what THAT Walter Reed looks like.

It'll be pretty funny when the principal has to deal with Walter Reed Middle School's sudden fame.

I couldn't find a way to do it without getting images of the actual Army Hospital instead. I mean, you'd really have to go WAY out of your way to fuck up that badly.

19. It was the whole opening of the speech where he accepted the nomination.
One heart warming bit in front of the picture:

I'm grateful to the President of the United States for leading us in these dark days following the worst attack in American history. (Great wonderful scripted cheers from the audience) The worst attack in American history and keeping us safe from another attack that many, that many thought was inevitable. (A coordinated Nazi like chant of USA! USA!)

25. Hillarious - as McCain would likely label the
parents of the kids who attend his negatively. This is not your average middle school, in fact it looks more impressive than some of the exclusive prep schools here in NJ.

As to Walter Reed Hospital, that would bring up his record on voting for veteran health care.

As to the near constant reference to Vietnam and being a POW, he owes John Kerry an apology for arguing in 2004, that Kerry should not have mentioned he even served. He used his at least 100 times more.
