The GOP's pretending to be moderate again. Will it work?

George W. Bush campaigned in 2000 on promises of being a "compassionate conservative" and a "uniter, not a divider."

In reality, he turned out to be hell's own conservative, and the only uniting he did was to unite the world in condemnation of his foreign policy.

Fast forward to 2004, and like Yogi Berra said, "it's deja vu all over again." The GOP is putting on it's best centrist face and trotting out speakers like Rudy and Ahnuld.

Meanwhile, the mainstream of the GOP, like Rick Santorum and Trent Lott are being kept safely out of view.

What I'm wondering is, will moderate voters fall for this again?

It's hard to pretend to be a moderate and also make the claim that all Democrats are cowards who would surrender to Osama Bin Ladin at the first opportunity.
