I would like to thank Sarah Palin from the bottom of my heart. Thanks to Sarah and her amazingly devisive, snarky and lie filled speech last night, my mother decided to update her voter registration and vote for Obama. This is a miracle in our family since my mother has been disgusted with any and all things relating to politics for the last eight years.
This was so not like the mother I grew up with who, with my Dad, tried to instill the importance of voting and appreciating our citizenship in America. They were immigrants from the West Indies who came here to give my sister and I a better life and, through hard work and many sacrifices, they did just that. My mother has been disgusted with politics and politicians since the great witch hunt of the Clintons in the 90s, she was a big believer in the Clintons. During the Bush II years, that disgust turned to apathy and every time my sister and I would try to get her involved and to vote, she would say "What's the difference? They are all liars and it will be more of the same with promises, lies and them never doing anything to help people." It was very frustrating and like banging our heads against a brick wall.
She liked Hillary and almost re-registered to vote for her, but became disappointed in the way that her campaign was run. As far as Obama was concerned, she was unsure of him and concerned for his safety but she was starting to change her tune about him after his convention speech. Last night changed everything and finally pushed my mother over the edge. Last night, Sarah Palin managed to turn my mother (who turned 65 on Monday) into a full blown Obama supporter and reminded her of the importance of voting again. Today Obama received a donation from my sister and I and gained a new supporter in my Mom. So, a heartfelt THANK YOU to Sarah Palin because she managed to do what eight years of failed attempts to convince my mother on the part of my sister and I did not do :applause:.
