Her first pick for President in 2000 was ultraconservative ex-Nixon aide Pat Buchanan. She wore his "America First" campaign button at a small Wasilla rally, The Associated Press reported in July 1999.
By August, however, Palin had switched her loyalties and volunteered to help run the state campaign of Republican billionaire Steve Forbes, according to the Daily Sitka Sentinel.
Palin's flirtation with Buchanan's brand of politics should concern voters weighing her as McCain's vice president, said one political expert.
"It was hypernationalistic - a very narrow definition of who fit in," said New America Foundation scholar Steve Clemons. Besides railing against gays, immigrants and free trade, Buchanan sounded alarms that America's days as a nation dominated by white Christians were numbered.
