The race that couldn’t get much closer just did.
As Republicans head to their national convention this week, President Bush and Democratic challenger John Kerry are deadlocked at 46 percentage points in Ohio, a new Dispatch Poll shows.
Bush led by 3 points in a Dispatch Poll just before the Democratic National Convention in late July. The margin of sampling error for both surveys is 2 percentage points, so the race has moved from a virtual tie to an actual tie.
Ralph Nader influences the race only slightly, though his 2 percent comes somewhat more from Kerry’s column than Bush’s. The consumer advocate has filed enough petition signatures to qualify for the Nov. 2 ballot as an independent, but many are being challenged.
