Local Alaskan Radio Talk Host Calls Obama a Marxist, Socialist on Local News Cast

Trippy coverage on their local CBS station. Might expect this on Fox News, but, even our local news programs would avoid this kind of talk. I would imagine the letters and phone calls ours would get, even here in NV. Wonder if Democrats get as much partisan favor there?

At about 5 to 6 minutes in, Radio guy says very nonchalantly, "Obama had that big show ... he's such a good orator ...but you take that suit off and he's a Socialist, he's a Marxist. He wants to give everything to everybody..." And the News Anchor doesn't bat an eye. Just accepts the other guy's comments as fact and moves on to the next partisan issue.

I'm so tired of telling them to use a fucking dictionary. This is another example of how the Bush presidency has specifically dumbed people down-- their sophistry confuses people into thinking that just because you say a rose is NOT a rose that you can do the same with everything else. Raising the taxes just a little bit on that 5% is not fucking redistribution of wealth. It's not Marxism, fascism or communism. Ugh.

I was driving across red states last week, hopping from one talk station to another. What was common was that they ALL were on a harangue about how Obama was a radical, part of the Weather Underground, a Black Panther, a Marxist, a Socialist, a thespian, and any other word that was not a part of their listening audience's working vocabulary. They were trying as hard as they could to whip up any type of indignation they could and get their slack-jawed followers to light the torches and grab the pitchforks.

I would be worried, except that most of their listeners would light the pitchforks and grab the wrong end of the torches.

We do have rightwing nutjobs on the radio here, but we also have more local "progressive" programs than most large cities do.

I'm not sure which radio host you're talking about.. but trust me.. our liberal hosts do an excellent job of ripping Mcsame a new one every single day!

I can't imagine one of our local anchors letting that stand, no matter how partisan or Repug we know these guys can be (one of our news casters who used to live down the street from us was Jim Gibbon's (R-NV Gov) campaign manager).

I don't ever recall seeing him before your post. The anchor you would usally see would be Dave Stroh who has been with the station for a long time.

You know what.. I have never listened to that fruitcake (Burke) and only know about him because it made such a stir in the local media when he got fired recently from... ... I dunno (maybe you do?) one of the other stations.

I can't even remember why they canned him? I just remember that Aaron Selbig who was on KUDO progressive radio actually reached out to him and told him that although he disagreed with him on every issue, he thought it stunk that he got fired.

Fast forward a few months, and the new director at KUDO wound up firing Aaron.. ..Aaron was told it was because his ratings were low (they weren't AT ALL) and it turned out that the new KUDO director didn't like that Aaron was favoring Democrat Ethan Berkowitz in the U.S. Congressional race over Democrat Jake Metcalfe.

In any event.. Eddie Burke returned Aaron's act of kindness and I read that he also made quite a comment about how unfair it was that Aaron was let go and he had him come on his new radio show. (Which is probably the only nice thing Eddie Burke has ever done for a Democrat in his life)

And Dan Fagan.. ...the only time I ever listen to him is when I tune into KFQD to listen to my Alaska Aces games and have to hear the last couple minutes of his show before the game comes on..

I remember when he was canned and he had him on the show. Why he did this, I don't know, perhaps radio show host solidarity? Who knows. As for Fagen I work in the oilfields and unfortunately am surrounded by wingnuts so I am bombarded by RW radio most of the day. Ugh.

If there's nothing better than the nutjobs on the radio.. can you wear an Ipod and listen to something that would mute their radio out, or do they not allow them?

I mean no disrespect to Alaskans by my post -- we've got nut right wingers locally here on the radio and in the news. I have just really never seen such a blatant comment on a local news cast go unchallenged, except of Fox ... which is fiction. Our local teevee guys usually attempt to be unbiased and/or prevent that type of bias. So, I didn't mean to offend, if I did.

I'll have to look into that radio comment a little more to see what the deal is.. We really are fortunate that we were the 14th city in the U.S. to sign on with Air America when they first launched, and they are still alive and well here!

The programming is now a combination of Air America, local progressive talk, Randi Rhodes (not certain what network she's on now?) as well as the Jones Radio Network (Big Eddie, etc....)

19. I took a look at the link you provided

and was surprised to find out that Channel 11 has teamed up with KBYR( RW radio). So, to answer your question, it would appear that the reason the newbie newscaster didn't bate eye at the remarks is that they are playing on the same team. Recently the local news outlets have been bought out and this would appear to be one of the new alignments that has been made. I would expect to see more of these type of unquestioned commentaries from these guys for now on.
