Obama will mobilize volunteers for Gustav

Obama will mobilize volunteers for Gustav

From the pool report:

Sen. Obama gathered the pool outside after services at St. Luke's Lutheran Church. He told us that his camapaign plans to mobilize its huge email list of supporters to volunteer or send money once the impact of Gustav becomes apparent and authorities know better what kind of help is needed. He said his campaign is coordinating with local authorities.

"We can activate an email list of a couple million people who want to give back," he said. "I think we can get tons of volunteers to travel down there if it becomes necessary."

Your pooler asked him if McCain's visit now is appropriate.

His response: "A big storm like this raises bipartisan concerns and I think for John to want to find out what's going on is fine."

"The thing that I always am concerned about in the middle of a storm is whether we're drawing resources away from folks on the ground because the secret service and various security requirements sometimes it pulls police, fire and other departments away from concentrating on the job."

"I'm assuming that where he went that wasn't an issue. Were going to try to stay clear of the area until things have settled down and then we'll probably try to figure out how we can be as helpful as possible."

12. Not a brilliant move...
but what we've known Obama to stand for all along. He is a community organizer and this is what he is good at. In Iowa, we saw him get his volunteers out even before the caucuses to help in communities all across the state, and more recently, at the time of the flood. There was no big photo op or presser. The organization just did it as he is doing now. He's a very practical man and knows that standing around talking through a bullhorn does not get things done. Getting people organized and empowered gets things done.

20. I just wanted to point out that Obama does not do
political stunts. He gets work done and quite often outside of the lights of camera. He attracts supporters who do the same and are willing to pitch in.

4. Barack "Clear thinking" Obama instead of John "Rush to judgment" McCain.
Even dumbass Bush said that he wasn't going down there before the storm because he would be getting in the way.

McCain is a rash, reckless piece of shit.

11. Great idea.
For those of us who can't actually go down there due to work and/or other considerations, we can indeed make a donation in Obama's name. Think I will do just that. Thanks for the inspiration.

7. EXCELLENT! RIGHT ON
THE MONEY!!!

With the massive machinery that Obama has in place, can you imagine him being able to - FROM AFAR, and NOT pulling resources from the states to accommodate him - muster say 1,000,000 people to donate (I consider that a low number but acheivable). This is not a photo-op but real work to provide $$$ for those who are being displaced.

:kick:

9. Once again, Obama is doing exactly the right thing.
And I will be giving my money to whatever fund they set up. I may even use my vacation to go down to NO, if needed. I love that he said this, because it's true:

"The thing that I always am concerned about in the middle of a storm is whether we're drawing resources away from folks on the ground because the secret service and various security requirements sometimes it pulls police, fire and other departments away from concentrating on the job."

"I'm assuming that where he went that wasn't an issue. Were going to try to stay clear of the area until things have settled down and then we'll probably try to figure out how we can be as helpful as possible."

I really don't believe this is even a consideration for Bush or McCain. They failed so miserably in the response last time that they will overdo it this time, and probably not to the benefit of the people who are in harm's way. McCain is going to NO to whoop Gustav's ass, I'm sure. Bring it on!

that organizational mind set is so deeply ingrained in his way of being,
the concepts of thinking about the common good for others
and the power of people helping people is second nature to him.
That's what I want in a President.

24. This man is amazing just for that. He said a lot of the concerns by DUers.
McCain goes down there and the attention is then diverted from the cause by the local firefighters and police to the pandering of the Secret Service and McCain/Palin's health. This is counter productive, dangerous, and actually causes more problems for the locations than the people.

Obama is taking the step to gather the people early and we all know he's going to be there with a shovel doing his duty and bringing all of us together to do our own.

McCain/Palin = EPIC FAIL.
